AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Mildred Jones Corley Griffin, 73, devoted wife of Mr. Percy E. Griffin, entered peacefully into eternal rest at her residence on November 18, 2009. She was born on March 23, 1936 as the third daughter of the late Willie Albert Jones and Bertha Mae Crawford Jones of Burke County, Waynesboro, GA. In addition to her parents, Mildred was predeceased by two devoted brothers-in-law, Robert L. Fryer and Jake Walker, and a caring father-in-law, Paul Griffin. A Home Going Service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the United House Of Prayer For All People, 1269 Wrightsboro Rd. Augusta, GA. 30901; with Elder George Young, Officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Gardens. In her childhood and teenage years, she lived in and attended elementary and high schools in Burke County. On April 18, 1963 she married her friend and mentor Mr. Theodore "Ted" Corley who predeceased her. On October 2, 1982 she married her best friend and soul mate, Mr. Percy Edward Griffin, Lead Singer of the Swanee Quintet. Mrs. Griffin gave her life to the Lord at an early age, and was baptized at Watkinsville Baptist Church, Watkinsville, GA. She maintained this membership until she went to live with an aunt in Miami, Florida in 1952 where she joined the Liberty City Church of Christ. While in Miami, Mildred worked and attended Nightingale College and completed requirements for the Physician Assistant Course in 1961. After nine years in Miami, Mildred returned to Augusta, where she resided for the next 48 years. Her first priority upon her return to Augusta was to reconnect to the body of Christ. She joined with her mother and family in membership at Elim Baptist Church and served faithfully from 1961 until 1963. In 1963 she married Mr. Theodore "Ted" Corley and they served the Lord together at Good Samaritan Baptist Church. After her marriage to Mr. Percy Edward Griffin in 1982, they worshipped together at The United House of Prayer For All People, where she enjoyed making a joyful noise to the Lord as a faithful member of the Happy Singers Choir. Mrs. Griffin loved the Lord, His Word and lifting praises to her Savior in both word and song. She also sought self-improvement and enjoyed a variety of interests and hobbies. She was an avid antique collector, gardener and homemaker. In 1977 she received the Certificate of Merit in completion of the Wilton Method of Cake Decorating and lavished her family and friends with this expertise for many years. In 1979 she attended Augusta Technical School where she completed the requirements to become an Administrative Secretary. Mildred loved and enjoyed life, her family and the beauty of God's world to which she sowed beauty through her numerous plants and flowers. Her memories will live in the hearts of her loving and devoted family, her husband of 27 years, Percy E. Griffin; three sisters Willie Mae Jones Fryer, Mattie Alberta Jones Walker, Frankie C. Jones Morgan, all of Augusta, GA; two brothers, Harrison Jones, Key West, FL, and Levi Jones Holmes, West Palm Beach, FL; four step children, Anton Walter Corley, Columbia, SC; Christine Corley Jones, Philadelphia, PA, Percy Griffin Jr. and Paul Griffin, both of Norfolk, VA; a loving mother-in-law Eula Mae Gibbs, Norfolk, VA and a dedicated step-mother-in-law Eva Mae Griffin, Chesapeake, VA; a special maternal aunt, Elizabeth Crawford Williams, Detroit, MI; a devoted and loving maternal cousin who is like a brother, LTC (Ret) Daniel Boatwright, Jr., Keysville, GA; four devoted nieces Harriett Fryer (Bobby) Parham , Martinez, GA, COL (Ret) Gwendolyn Fryer, Evans, GA, Terry S. Feagin, Augusta, GA and Olivia R. Feagin (Bounyasizh, "Sid") Mitthivong , Grovetown, GA; one nephew, William Douglas (Kesa) Morgan ; two special individuals whom she loved and found joy in being a positive influence during their childhood years, Levi W. Hill, IV and Emily C. Hill Ross; a special caregiver who was like a daughter, Beverley Fryer Harris, August, GA; five step- grandchildren; four great nieces; 4 great nephews; three great great nieces and two great great nephews along with a host of cousins, friends and church family. The family would also like to thank Nicole, Katherine, the staff of Odyssey Hospice as well as the entire hospital staff of Doctor's Hospital for the gentle and compassionate care they provided to Mildred in her last days. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM on Friday, November 27, 2009 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home 2524 Lumpkin Rd., Augusta, Georgia.
