Josephine Rogers Engler (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Josephine Sheppard Rogers Engler died peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2009. She was 84 years old. A native of Blenheim, S.C., Ms. Engler lived in Augusta all her adult life. Survivors include her five children, Doug Engler (Libby), Gay White (Drake), Julie Miles, Lou Larkin (Chris), Sam Engler (Amy); her grandchildren, John Engler, Elizabeth Beman, Sarah White, Julia White, Keith White, Tucker Miles, Sam Miles, Christopher Larkin, Morgan Larkin, Katie Larkin, Sam Engler, Josie Engler; and two great-grandsons. Jo Jo, as she was fondly called by many, was a devoted mother and loved family gatherings. She attended Furman University and graduated with a BS in Nursing from Vanderbilt University. She trained at Johns Hopkins to be supervisor of the first premature nursery at University Hospital here in Augusta. She also taught pediatric nursing at the Barrett School of Nursing and served as a medical missionary in Liberia. Ms. Engler was a member and former deacon at First Baptist Church. It was Ms. Engler's wish that her body be donated to MCG to help further medical education. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Dr. Roger Murchison and Dr. R. J. Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church rotunda. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way Ext., Augusta, Ga. 30909 or the Jud C. Hickey Center for Alzheimer's Care, 1901 Central Ave., Augusta, Ga. 30904.
