Virgil Howard Black (MILLEN, Ga.)

MILLEN, Ga. - Virgil Howard Black, 84, of 860 North Jones Plantation Road, Millen, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at University Hospital, Augusta. He was born June 24, 1924, to the late Joseph Leonidas and Mamie Kitchens Black of Emanuel County. He graduated from Summertown High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a rural mail carrier in Herndon and Midville for 30 years. In 1996 he and his family were named Farm Family of the Year in Jenkins County. He was a member of Fairhaven United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Hall Black of the home; a son, Virgil Howard Black, Jr., and wife, Betty, of Millen; two daughters, Margaret Black Martin and husband, Preston, of St. Simons Island and Nancy Black Stone and husband, Charlie, of Spencer, Va.; granddaughter, Ivey Courtney Stone of Missoula, Mont.; grandson, Charles Sanford Stone, II, of Charleston, S.C.; and step-granddaughter, Amanda Brooke Martin of Dublin; two sisters, Sarah Black Johnson of Millen and Susie Black Womack of Midville. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Howard Hillhouse Stone. The funeral will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, at Fairhaven United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sue Diebolt officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately after the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Crowe-Fields Funeral Home of Millen in charge of arrangements.
