Thomas James Quinn (MARTINEZ, Ga.)

MARTINEZ, Ga. - Thomas J. Quinn, 79, entered into his heavenly home on Thursday, October 23, 2008. He was born in 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Thomas James Quinn II and Adeline Isabel Julien. Memorial Mass will be held Monday, October 27, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Rev. Gaspar Hegedus celebrant. Mr. Quinn is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ellenruth; two daughters: Sharon Ann (David) Burgess and Michelle Shores and one son: Martin Michael (Lee) Quinn. Preceding him in death were a son: Thomas J. Quinn IV and daughter: Karen Ann Quinn. He has 4 grandchildren: Amanda Irish, Jeremy Shores, Christie Shores and Kaitlyn Quinn. He is also survived by a sister: Marybeth Griffith of Wawake, Indiana and a brother: Charles Quinn of Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Quinn retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. After retirement from the Army he worked for Civil Service at Fort Gordon and retired. Following retirement, Mr. Quinn remained active in numerous volunteer positions serving his Lord and the people he loved. He was a volunteer for 13 years at DDEAMC at Fort Gordon, as an Eucharist Minister in the chaplain's office, visiting with the sick, 2 years at the VA Hospital volunteer as an Eucharist Minister, as well as volunteer work at Doctors Hospital and Catholic Social Services. He worked as a volunteer in various capacities with the Red Cross at DDEAMC at Fort Gordon over the years. He visited with the sick and shut-ins form his church, St. Teresa of Avila over many years and was always faithful in attending daily Mass at his beloved church Mr. Quinn was a charter member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Fraternity which he helped to establish on October 4, 1984. Mr. Quinn became a Secular Franciscan in December of 1963. During his years of active military service, he served overseas in Italy, Germany (where he met and married his wife, Ellenruth) and Korea. He served numerous assignments in the United States while on active duty. He was a charter member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. During his tenure as a volunteer with DDEAMC at Fort Gordon, Mr. Quinn received Volunteer of the Year Award many times. He also received the Gartlyn Award from the Catholic Diocese in Savannah for his outstanding volunteer services. He leaves to mourn his loving family and many beloved friends throughout the Augusta area. Always a smile and a kind word, as well as a helping hand, Mr. Quinn loved his Lord and his family and his many friends throughout his years on earth. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. The Vigil for the Deceased will be held on today, Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 5:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends after the Vigil at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484.
