MARTINEZ, Ga. - Mrs. Helga Anna Kane, 72, of Martinez, best friend for 47 years and beloved wife for 46 years to MSgt. (Ret.) Thomas B. Kane, Jr., died Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Heartland Hospice after an eight year battle with cancer and other illnesses. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto W. Anger and Anna M. Anger; and her brothers, Gerhardt Anger and Emile Anger. Additional survivors include her brother, Adolf Anger of Bad Ripoldsau, Germany; daughter, Brigitte Mueller of Oedheim, Germany; twin grandsons, Thomas and Kim Mueller; and grandson, Dennis Mueller of Oedheim, Germany; nieces, Jeannie Conners of Maine and Elke Anger of Unterheimbach, Germany; and nephews, Jordan Kane and Zachariah Kane of Woodstock, Ga., Jay Conners of Scituate, Mass., and Manfried Anger of Unterheimbach, Germany. Helga was born in Unterheimbach Kreis Oehringen, Germany. She met her future husband in Stuttgart, Germany in 1961 where she was working as a nursing aide at the Burger Hospital. They were married in Giessen, Germany in 1962. Helga made her first trip to the United States in 1966 when she and her husband were stationed in California. They later returned to Germany with the United States Army and they returned to the United States permanently in 1974. In 1975, they moved to heir present home in Martinez. One of Helga's proudest moments was when she was sworn in as a United States Citizen in 1989 by U.S. District Judge Dudley Bowen. Helga was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 35 years and was a member of Auxiliary Unit 63, Augusta, Ga. She was also a member of La Societe des Femmes for 35 years with current membership in Cabane Locale 719, Augusta, Ga. Prior to her diagnosis with cancer in 2000, she had worked as a volunteer at the Uptown Division of the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 20 years. Funeral services will be held at Bellevue Memorial Gardens Chapel in Grovetown Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Stephen M. Russ officiating. Helga will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Friends are asked to assemble at the Bellevue Memorial Gardens Chapel. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Albert Voels, Jim Zills, Bob Harris, Thomas Thigpen, Grady Tabb, and Jordan Kane. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Auxiliary Unit 63 and Cabane 719. In life, Helga loved flowers. However, she always thought that flowers piled up and wilting on a grave were a sad sight and such a waste. Consequently it was her desire that her husband respectfully suggest that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so make donations to Fisher House, East Hospital Road, Fort Gordon, GA 30905. These donations will help the families of our brave warriors wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan in the War on Terror who are recovering at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. Helga's husband would like to express his deep gratitude to Dr. William Conkright and the exceptional staff at Heartland Hospice. He also thanks the hundreds of Doctors, Nurses, and other medical professionals at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, University Hospital, Doctors Hospital, and Augusta Oncology Associates for the care and compassion they showed toward her during her eight years of illness. And a special thanks to those anonymous caring people who were thoughtful enough to donate the blood she received during her battle. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home. Thomas L. King Funeral Home, 124 Davis Rd., Martinez.
