Nan Harris Melcher (MARTINEZ, Ga.)

MARTINEZ, Ga. - Mrs. Nan (Harris) Melcher passed away at her residence on May 15 with her beloved family at her side. Survivors include her loving and devoted husband Richard of thirty-six years. Dr. Melcher was her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life. She is survived by her precious children, Evan (Niki) Melcher and Erin (Shawn) Rosenthal. Mrs. Melcher is also survived by her mother Sylvia (late Seymour), one sister Jan (Burt) Gilberg, and a brother Dale Harris in addition to loving nieces and nephews. Nan's extended family includes numerous cousins from Canada and the States. Her loving and adorable God Children are Kimberly, Mary and Holly McInnes (Jan and Fleming) of Evans, Ga. Mrs. Melcher was born in Chicago, and received her BA and Master's degrees from NorthEastern Illinois University in Elementary Education and Learning Disabilities. Nan, Richard and Evan relocated permanently to Augusta in 1977. Erin arrived as a true southern belle shortly thereafter. Nan taught in the Columbia County School System (South Columbia Elementary and Stevens Creek Elementary) for twenty-four years and had numerous students who cherished their time in her classes. Many of these devoted students remained in touch. Communicating with former students, parents and other teachers was the joy of her life. Her hobby was arts and crafts and many children received her special gifts. In 1996, Mrs. Melcher was honored with the Prestigious Milken Educator Award as one of the finest elementary teachers in the country. She retired from teaching in 2005 due to illness. Throughout her time in Augusta, Nan was a member of the Augusta Junior Woman's Club, Congregation Children of Israel, and was active in the Augusta West Dance Studio as both a dancer and a devoted parent. The family would like to express their gratitude to dear friends who supported Nan through her long and brave battle with cancer. Special thanks to Drs. Townsend and Keaton. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM, Friday May 16 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez, Ga.,30907. Rabbi Klensin officiating Chaplain Alan Faulkner and others will share memories. A Graveside service will be in Chicago.
