AUGUSTA, Ga. - Florrie Welch Jones Oplinger departed this life on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Kentwood Nursing Facility. Mrs. Oplinger was born May 31, 1917 in Lyons, Ga. She was the third child of the late Jesse James Jones and Ola Estelle Sanders Jones. All five of her siblings preceded her in death. Prior to her marriage in 1948, Mrs. Oplinger worked in several positions for the original Friedman's Jewelers in Savannah, Ga. During World War II she worked as a photographer at Hunter Army Air Field, GA photographing flight crews with their airplanes. After becoming an Army wife, she traveled widely and participated in many activities. Her favorite pastimes included picture painting, gardening, and most of all, dancing with her husband. Mrs. Oplinger is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Horace E. Oplinger, Jr. and one daughter, Delores E. Oplinger of Grovetown. Mrs. Oplinger has donated her body to the Medical College of Georgia. She will be honored and remembered at the annual service conducted in the Memorial Garden at MCG.
