Leslie Wilkinson (MACON, Ga.)

MACON, Ga. - Mr. Charles Leslie Wilkinson, Jr., 91, of Macon, Georgia, entered into eternal rest on February 4, 2008. Mr. Wilkinson, a retired chemical engineer with Georgia Kaolin Company, was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Emily Watson Wilkinson, a native of Newport. Mr. Wilkinson was the son of the late Charles Leslie Wilkinson and Flora Fitchett Wilkinson of Yazoo City, Mississippi. Mr. Wilkinson was raised in Yazoo City where he was an Eagle Scout, earning every merit badge available at that time. He graduated from Yazoo City High School at the age of 16 and entered Mississippi State University, where he graduated at age 20 with a B.S. in chemical engineering. He was a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves and was called to active duty at the outbreak of World War II. He initially served in the Coastal Artillery but was later transferred to the Army Air Corps, where he served at Sheppard Field, Texas and later served with the 20th Air Force in the Pacific Theater, rising to the rank of Major. For many years, Mr. Wilkinson was Chief Engineer for Georgia Kaolin Company, for whom he had worked since 1963. Following retirement in 1982, he formed Wilkinson Engineering, Inc. as a consultant in the field of non-metallic minerals, an area in which he had been involved for over 40 years. His expertise was in great demand. Earlier in his career, he had been employed by Attapulgas Clay Company, Porocel Corporation (Englehard), Magcobar (Dresser Industries), and Delta Engineering. Mr. Wilkinson was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Sons of the American Revolution, Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME, and the American Legion. He was a Professional Engineer. Mr. Wilkinson is survived by his three children, Emily W. Murphey, of Macon, Georgia, Charles Leslie Wilkinson, III (and his wife, Marcy), of Grovetown, Georgia, Elbert Watson Wilkinson (and his wife, Susi), of Ocala, Florida; his seven grandchildren, Douglas Hartley, of Roswell, Georgia, Elizabeth Wilkinson Harley, of Evans, Georgia, Melissa Wilkinson Stewart, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Catherine Wilkinson, of Grovetown, Georgia, Cara Wilkinson Fortney, of Williston, Florida, Matthew Wilkinson, of Williston, Florida, and Charles Leslie Wilkinson, II, of Ocala, Florida. Mr. Wilkinson is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Megan Fogarty and Madison Fogarty, of Grovetown, Georgia, Maxwell Harley and Davis Harley, of Evans, Georgia, Duane Stewart, IV, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Emily Wilkinson, Matthew Wilkinson, Zachary Wilkinson, and Bailey Wilkinson, of Williston, Florida. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Wilkinson had been a resident of Macon, Georgia since 1963. He was a former resident of Little Rock, Arkansas, Bainbridge, Georgia, and Houston, Texas. He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and a member of Christ Church in Macon, Georgia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newport, Arkansas. A reception for family and friends will be held at the Parish Hall at 12:00 noon prior to the service. Interment will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Newport.
