Merle William Riley (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Merle William Riley, 78, beloved husband of Sheena Margaret Riley, nŽe Rolland, died at his home on Tuesday, December 4. Merle was the son of the late John and Rose Resnik Riley. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Gene Alden Riley and his wife, Mona Lee, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a large and loving extended family, and very dear supportive friends. Merle was a native of Washington, Pennsylvania, and was especially proud of his Slovenian roots through his maternal grandparents who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the century. Dr. Riley earned a degree in Pharmacy from Duquesne University in 1951 and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Cincinnati in 1963 at which time he assumed a faculty position in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Georgia. During his long and distinguished career he received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Class of 1982 and the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1988. Merle had a keen interest in semantics. He was an accomplished artist, singer and actor, a past President of the Greater Augusta Arts Council and was involved with the Augusta Choral Society and the Augusta Players. He won the Augusta Herald Award for Best Actor in 73/74 and the Louise Proctor Character Acting Award in 81/82. He was a golf enthusiast and member of Forest Hills Golf Club. He was also a past President of the Unitarian Universalist Church. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 2:00 p.m on Friday, December 7, Rev. Roy Reynolds officiating.
