Joe J. Pulliam (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Graveside services for Joe J. Pulliam Jr. will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 17, at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, GA. The reverend Roger Bennett will preside at the service. Mr. Pulliam was the son of Joe J Pulliam and Etta Mae Norman Pulliam of Elbert County, GA. He was born November 19, 1918 in Elbert Co. and died November 14, 2007 in his home near Augusta. Mr. Pulliam was a successful and well-known Augusta businessman. As a young man, he moved from Elbert County to Miami Beach, Florida, where he and his brother owned and operated an independent grocery business. In 1950, he moved to Augusta, where he was a long-time furniture merchant. Among his other business ventures, he was owner and President of Queen City Mattress Company in Charlotte, NC, owner and President of Fairway Furniture in Augusta, and co-owner of P&D Construction, also in Augusta. He was also active in church and civic affairs and served as President of the Augusta Lions Club and President of the Augusta Downtown Merchants Association. He is survived by his wife, Doris Bennett Pulliam; three sons, Norman Pulliam Sr. of Spartanburg, SC, Ronald Pulliam of Athens, GA, and Joe Pulliam III of Greenville, SC; two stepchildren, Michael Padgett, Jr. of Atlanta, GA and Lyn Padgett Jones of Lilburn, GA; 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Pulliam Ayers of Bowman, GA and Betty Pulliam West of Elberton, GA, and one brother, Norman Pulliam of Johns Island, SC. He was also predeceased by daughter Betty Fountain of Augusta.
