John Gunter (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. John Gunter, of Augusta, Ga., entered into eternal rest on Friday evening, October 12, 2007 at the Medical College of Georgia after a brief illness. Homegoing services will be held Friday, October 19 at 11 a.m. at the Paine College Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel on Druid Park Avenue with the Rev. Dr. Oscar Wells presiding. John was born June7, 1926 in McCormick, S.C. to Ben and Mattie Gunter. He was united in holy matrimony to Willie Mae (Scott) for fifty-seven years. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Fort Gordon Commissary after more than thirty years of dedicated service. He was Chairman of the Deacons Board and active in several ministries including Sunday School, Golden Agers, Senior Choir, and the Missionary Circle at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. A strong advocate of community service throughout his life, John worked with the East Augusta Volunteer Firemen, the Neighborhood Association, and the W.S. Hornsby Elementary School as a volunteer "Grandparent." He leaves to cherish his memories and works: a daughter, Betty Scott (Rev. Jimmy) Williams, Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, Dr. Randy (Anne) Gunter, Savannah; a sister, Savannah Mitchell, Umatilla, Fla.; a brother, Lloyd (Margaret) Gunter, Augusta; a loving sister-in-law, Janie Lee Moody, Augusta; a grandson, William "Bill" Scott; a granddaughter, Adria Gunter, Hyattsville, Md.; a great-granddaughter, Sade' Scott, Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandsons, William, Jr., Jeremiah, and Josiah Scott, Cincinnati, Ohio; godchildren, Wayne Brooks, Augusta, Ronald Grant, Atlanta, and Dedra Grant, Richmond, Va., Dr. Felicia V. Swinney, Korea; devoted cousins, Rosa P. Lewis and Deborrah Wilcox, Augusta; devoted friends, Gwen Collier, Statesboro and Wylene Swinney, Atlanta; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 18 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 931 Cedar Street, Augusta, Ga. C.A.
