AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Cleveland W. Bethune, age 74, of Evans, Ga., went to be with the Lord Saturday, September 1, 2007 following an extended battle with cancer. Mr. Bethune was born on February 25, 1933 in Augusta, Ga. He was the son of the late Ruby O'Tyson Bethune Ray and the late Wade Hampton Bethune. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Bethune worked for 50 years and became a partner in the businesses with his good friend, Frank Lanier at Hart Electric Supply Co., Hart Lighting Center, LBS Supply and Lanier and Bethune Enterprises. During his life he also served as a mentor and employee of Sentinel Probation and was a realtor for Blanchard and Calhoun Real Estate. He was a deacon, former Sunday School teacher, and served his church and the Lord faithfully. Mr. Bethune was a member of Parkway Baptist Church. He was a Mason, a member of the American Legion, Realtors Association, the USS Haynesworth Naval Association, and the Gideon's. Whether in church, business or with family and friends, Mr. Bethune would always be quick to share his infectious smile and his hardy handshake. He will be missed. Mr. Bethune is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Peggy King Bethune; one son, Carl Bethune (Charlotte) of Evans; daughter, Brenda Adkisson (Earl) of Kennesaw, Ga.; brother, Raymond Bethune (Earnestine) of Stockbridge, Ga.; grandchildren, Ashby Bethune, Aaron Bethune, Keely Bethune, John Adkisson (Katie), Alyson Davis (Nelson), Greg Adkisson; and great-grandchild, Elijah Adkisson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wade Hampton Bethune, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Robert Rayner officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Jack Thomas, Barry Norton, Randy Allen, Robert Harn, Alan Oswald, Jimmy Reeder, and David Hueguenin. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Parkway Baptist Church and Frank Lanier, William Wilcher, Vernon Hargrove, Langdon Adkins, Cole Cooper, Stanley Crouch, Bill Cawley, Aubrey Clark, Louie Gantt, Marion Reese, Bill Shields, Doug Reese, Herb Moxley, and Ralph Herndon. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Dr. John Hudson and his staff and Dr. Christopher Gibbs and staff for their loving care and thoughtfulness during Mr. Bethune's illness.
