Cook, Sr. (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - E. Lawrence Cook, Sr., M.D., 78, beloved spouse and father, entered into rest on May 1, 2007 at Doctors Hospital following a short illness. A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday May 4, 2007 in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA with the Rev. Lynn Drake officiating. The son of Reverend James Arthur and Mary Robarts Cook, Dr. Cook was born in Savannah, Georgia and raised in Brunswick and Wrens, Georgia. He attended Wrens High School and Emory at Oxford University, also receiving a Batchelor's Degree in Education from Georgia Teacher's College in Statesboro, Georgia. He received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1958, and completed an internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Georgia. He practiced family medicine in Thomson, Georgia from 1959 to 1972, after which he completed a residency in psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia. He then served as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College from 1975 to 1980 and as an Asssociate Clinical Professor from 1989 to 1993. In 1980, Dr. Cook entered the private practice of psychiatry in association with Physicians' Multispecialty Group in Augusta, Georgia. In this capacity, he was the first psychiatrist to serve as a member of the burn team at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center. He was nationally and internationally recognized for his pioneering work and publications regarding the psychiatric and pain management aspects of burn care. Dr. Cook retired from active practice in 1993. Survivors include his wife; Patricia N. Watkins, M.D. of Augusta, two sons; Ernest L. Cook Jr. of Atlanta, Richard N. Cook and wife Tammy B. Cook of Raleigh, NC; one daughter Ms. Terri A. Cook of Augusta, and one grandchild; Lucy B. Cook of Raleigh, NC. Pallbearers will be Joseph L. Johnson, John P. Sheehan, J. Randall Scarborough, J.
