Avery William Salter (WAYNESBORO, Ga.)

WAYNESBORO, Ga. - Mr. Avery William Salter, 77, beloved husband of Joyce T. Salter, was escorted into Heaven on March 28, 2007. Mr. Salter was born in Tattnall County, Ga., but had lived in Waynesboro for most of his adult life. In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Ted and Tammie Salter, Phil and Shirley Salter, Jerry and Ann Salter, Greg and Debbie Salter, all of Waynesboro; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Sam Fouche of Evans and eight grandchildren, Kimberly (Salter) and Justin Dixon, Kristen Salter, Tara Salter, Samantha and Noah Fouche, Jeremy Akins, Thomas and Sarah Ann Kelly. A brother, Revis Salter and a sister, Clara Nell Canady, also survived Mr. Salter. Mr. Salter retired from Canal Industries (Southland Timber Company) in 1994 after 41 years of employment. He was a loving father and grandfather and was known to many in the community as "Pops". He spent his post-retirement days enjoying his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him; however, those who knew him can rest assured that he is in a better place. The family will receive family and friends at 640 Cherokee Drive, Waynesboro. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 220 East Sixth Street (formerly Mizell Ford building). Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 30, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church Waynesboro. The Reverends Wayne Dixon and John Wall will officiate. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be George Palmer, Floyd Mincey, Dr. Johnny Christian, Dr. Hugh Scott, Jake Smith, Phillip Wren, Jesse Reese and David Dodge.
