Marian Maxwell Jakes (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Marian Maxwell Jakes, 86, wife of the late William E. Jakes, Jr., entered into rest on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Dodson officiating. Mrs. Jakes, a native of Augusta, was a graduate of Tubman High School and Augusta Junior College. She went on to attend the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Tri-Delta sorority and was an Honors graduate. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Suzanne Wesley Circle, and a two time president of the Cranford Flower Club, as well as being a member of the Augusta Country Club. She also belonged to the Sandwich, New Hampshire Historical Society. Together with her first husband, Dr. George C. Grise, she was a charter member and board member of the Hilldale Methodist Church, and a charter member of the Junior Woman's Club, both in Clarksville, TN. She worked for many years as a member of St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary and the American Cancer Society. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Edith Guye and husband, Russell, a son, Christopher Allan Smith and wife, Lynda, and grandchildren, Amanda Graham Guye, Nicolas Barrett Guye, Joseph B. Smith, and Christopher A. Smith. She is also survived by step sons, Joseph E. Smith, Michael W. Smith, William E. Jakes III, step daughters, Harriet Smith Heinemann, Ashley Smith Wilson, and Ann Jakes Harris, as well as sisters in law, Connie Maxwell, Dorothy Dodson, and Ruby Jane Grise, and one brother in law, Julian Jakes. She was preceded in death by her parents, T. Allan Maxwell, and Edith Graham Maxwell, brothers, T. Allan Maxwell, Jr., and Thomas R. Maxwell, husbands, Dr. George C. Grise and R.J. Bates Smith and a step son, R. Jackson B. Smith, Jr. Pallbearers will be Christopher A. Smith, Joseph Eve Smith, Christopher A. Smith, Jr., Joseph Bates Smith, Russell S.
