James E. Wells (HEPHZIBAH, Ga.)

HEPHZIBAH, Ga. - Major James E. Wells (US Army, Retired), age 88, entered into rest Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at his home. Born in Detroit, MI, he had lived in Augusta most of his life and was husband of the late Maydean H. Wells. He served with the US Army's 106th Infantry Division during World War II and was injured during the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Wells was the owner of Southern Roofing and Christian Metal Screen Co. of Augusta. He served as a past president of the Augusta Democratic Party, was past president of State of Georgia Sheet Metal Workers, the Georgia State 4-H Advisors, and the Richmond County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Augusta Builders Exchange and was an active member of AMVETS. He was also Santa Clause for the Augusta Christmas Parade and at the Medical College of Georgia for many years. Survivors include his wife, Mary Anne Kelly Wells; three step-children, Mike Kelly and wife Helene, Judy Kelly, and Lauren Rhodes and husband Carl, all of Augusta; ten step-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Polly Walls and husband Ray of Perry, OK; and several nieces and nephews living in Oklahoma. The funeral will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Poteet Funeral Homes - South Chapel with Rev. Gary E. McWhorter officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park with full military honors accorded by the Fort Gordon Ceremonial Detachment.
