Joceil J. Allen (COLUMBIA, S.C.)

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Service for Joceil J. Allen, 82, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mrs. Allen, wife of the late Henry S. Allen, Sr.,died Friday, January 26, 2007, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga. Born in White Pond (Robeson County), N.C. she was a daughter of the late Joe James and Sallie Mae Rowell Johnson. During WW II, she was the first woman to work as an elec-welder in the shipwright department building liberty ships. An avid gardener, she was a former member of the Brandon Hills Garden Club. Her many civic activities included memberships in the Order of the Eastern Star and VFW Ladies Auxiliary, working as an election poll manager as well as volunteer work at the V.A. Hospital where she logged five thousand hours. Mrs. Allen and her late husband were owner-operators of Allen Gulf Service Station, Allen Fuel Oil and other retail business in Lexington and Richland Counties. They were also involved with farming ventures in Richland, Lexington and Orangeburg Counties. Mrs. Allen was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and Bauknight Bible Class. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Tom Kemp of Evans, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Henry S. Allen, Jr. and Nancy of Wilmington, N.C.; brother, Bobby H. Johnson of Fayettevlle, N.C.; sisters, Grace Lee of Fayetteville, Lois Lewis of Hope Mills, N.C. and Shelby Baxley of Burkburnett, Tex.; and grandchildren, Alaina Kemp, Vanessa Kemp, Christopher Kemp, Amberly and Cameron Allen, Charlton, Darren and Wesley Allen. She was predeceased by son, Lamar Allen; grandson, Ashton L. Allen; brothers, Harvey, Albert, Raeford and Lamar Johnson; and sister, Betty Williams. Sign the guestbook at
