Mattie Scott Bates (AIKEN, S.C.)

AIKEN, S.C. - Mrs. Mattie Scott Bates, formerly of 651 Lincoln Ave., entered into rest Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 2:07 p.m. from the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center. Funeral service will be held Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. from the Zion Fair Missionary Baptist Church, 97 Dry Branch Road in New Ellenton, S.C. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Survivors include one brother, Freddie Scott, Aiken, S.C.; three sisters-in-law, Roberta B. Jackson, Valarie B. McDaniel, Cullen, La., and Julia Mae B. Wilson, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; a devoted nephew, Eddie (Pearl Gibson) Scott, Jr. and children of Aiken; godchildren, Leroy Dunn, Jr., Shandrell Lewis, Aiken, and Barbara Joy Rouse Gipson, Calif. Mrs. Bates was born in Barnwell County, S.C., a daughter of the late Henry (Caroline Williamson) Scott, April 15, 1917. At an early age she confessed The Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at Union Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Aiken County, S.C. As her walk with the Lord progressed, she was elected Chief of the Usher Board and Mother of the church for many, many years until her health failed. She was affiliated with New Homemakers, Joyette Club, and Smith-Hazel Senior Citizens Club. She was an avid seamstress and gardener, the owner/operator of Joe's Taxi and Joe's Curb Market in Aiken, S.C. She was united in holy wedlock to the late Deacon Joe Bates in the winter of 1938. The family will receive friends at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The remains will lie in state at the church Thursday from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home, Aiken, S.C.
