Portis to Redskins: Have fun

Associated Press

Clinton Portis was back in costume Thursday, colorfully dressed as a dance instructor named "Choo-Choo."

The Washington Redskins running back wore an orange shirt with sequined and ruffled red, orange and yellow sleeves. Around his neck was a long orange scarf decorated with a huge safety pin. On his head was a black wig with a huge bun on top. He looked into cameras through oversized blue-tinted glasses with lavender frames -- with a $9.99 price tag still attached.

It's amazing what a slump-ending 196-yard game will do.

"It's a message for the Washing-ton Redskins to go out there and have fun," said Portis, his voice raised an octave or two. "When you have fun, you win."

PANTHERS: Vinny Testaverde is the leading candidate to start at quarterback after he practiced for a second day in a row.

Testaverde, who turns 44 next week, and undrafted rookie Matt Moore took all the snaps as David Carr missed his second consecutive practice with a concussion.

Coach John Fox held off selecting a starter for Sunday's game against Atlanta, but said Testaverde has looked good after he was sidelined with a right Achilles' tendon injury last week.

BEARS: Chicago has lost nine-time Pro Bowl left guard Ruben Brown for the season because of a right shoulder injury that will require surgery.

DOLPHINS: Linebacker Zach Thomas may be back in the lineup this week.

He has been bothered by the lingering effects of a concussion and subsequent car accident.

Thomas said he expects to play Sunday against Buffalo.

CHIEFS: Running back Larry Johnson 's injured right foot "has made significant improvement," the team said.

A Denver television station reported earlier this week that Johnson has a broken foot and is out for the year. The Chiefs have insisted all they know is he has a mid-foot sprain and will probably not play this Sunday.

VIKINGS: Rookie wide receiver Sidney Rice didn't practice because of a hamstring injury.

After aggravating the injury on Wednesday, Rice was unable to take the field.
