Lawrence helped care for her sister, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1983.
"I saw the way she suffered," Lawrence said. "I just knew I was going to die."
Her family and friends helped her stay optimistic, and now she spends her time volunteering with the Pink Magnolias, Relay for Life and Reach to Recovery.
"I look at life so differently now," she said. "It changed me to the fact that I appreciate life."
"Don't focus on the negative. You're going to beat this. Don't go pitying yourself."
