Another Nike Peach Jam basketball tournament brings another load of talent to North Augusta’s Riverview Park Activities Center this week.
When the Nike Peach Jam begins Wednesday with a play-in game at noon, followed by pool play at 5 p.m., spectators will have the chance to see some of the top high school players in the nation. Surrounding each court will be the biggest college coaches aiming to secure commitments.
“I’ve always been told they watch the same players play in the summer season, but it’s like they all elevate their game when they get here because of the atmosphere,” said Rick Meyer, North Augusta’s director of parks, recreation and tourism. “The atmosphere is tough to beat.”
Thursday and Friday feature all-day pool play, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals Saturday. The 15- and 16-under finals will be held Sunday morning, and the main event, 17-under finals, will be at 2 p.m.
A surprising wild card addition to the list of teams is Nike Phamily, which made the tournament despite a 2-14 summer record. That addition means the favorite for the No. 1 spot in the 2018 player rankings, Marvin Bagley III, will be on hand.
Bagley, a 6-11 forward from Phoenix, is an overwhelming No. 1 prospect in this year’s rankings, and the five-star recruit will be a major focal point of the Nike Peach Jam.
Nike Phamily is slotted in Pool A, which is led by No. 1 seed Howard Pulley. Pool B includes BABC, which is the only team to qualify for the Nike Peach Jam every year.
Pool C includes two wild-card teams and is up for grabs, while Pool D could be the most competitive between the ultra-talented California Supreme and hot Bradley Beal Elite.
Among California Supreme’s loaded roster is Bol Bol, son of Manute Bol. At 7-2, the California center will easily stand out on the Riverview Park courts and is one of the top-ranked players in the 2018 class.
