Military

Air Force Reserve Airman Dalton B. King has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Larry King and Rebecca Renew, and stepson of Michael Renew, and a 2013 graduate of Cross Creek High School.

Arts honors

James “Bo” Higgins, a senior from Martinez, and Luke Leightner, a sophomore from Augusta, were chosen to participate in Reinhardt University’s Convocation of Artists and Scholars. The week-long event featured music recitals, creative writing readings, a student research conference, a student-teacher portfolio exhibit, student art and science exhibits, an international culture festival and a communications conference.

Receives arts honor

Damien Sneed, a graduate of Davidson Fine Arts School and conductor, pianist, producer and recording artist, received the 2014 Sphinx Medal of Excellence, along with Pedrito Martinez and Carla Dirlikov, at the Kennedy Center on April 16.

The annual Sphinx Medals of Excellence are awarded to extraordinary black and Latino leaders in music who demonstrate artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination and leadership.

Following the ceremony, the honorees attended a black tie-dinner hosted by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Receives National Science Foundation Award

Anne Zimmerman was accepted into the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

The Augusta native is a senior at Georgia College and is the first undergraduate in the school’s Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences to receive the fellowship.

She will begin graduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., in the fall.
