Military training

Army Pfc. Kartrinna N. Powell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Phyllis Mitchell of Hephzibah and Willie Powell of Conyers, Ga., and a 2001 graduate of Butler High School.

Army Pvt. Quintanany D. Young graduated from Basic Training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Sandra Young of Hephbzibah and William Heggs of Augusta, and a 2008 graduate of Burke County High School.

Marine Corps Pfc. Ryan L. Self graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is the son of Shannon Self and 2011 graduate of Cross Creek High School.

Army Pvt. Kayla A. Greer graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Kennda and Howard Greer.

Army National Guard Pfc. Susan S. Schatz graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. She is the daughter of Raymond and Susan Schatz and a 2011 graduate of A.R. Johnson Magnet School. She earned an associate degree in 2011 from Augusta Technical College.

Rotary donation

The Augusta South Rotary Club presented a check for $2,550 to the Golden Harvest Food Bank. The funds were raised from the Stop Hunger Now event and will assist in continuing the backpack program at Glenn Hills Elementary School.

Medical award

Dr. Ruth-Marie “Rhee” Fincher has received the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education. She is Professor Emeritus and inaugural Vice Dean for Academic Affairs for the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University. The award recognizes extraordinary individual contributions to medical schools and to the medical education community as a whole.

Scholarships

The Rotary Club of Augusta presented scholarships to Tabatha Bowles (Westside High School), Sapna Darji (Westside High School), Tyiesha Walker (Butler High School) and Kashif Molwani (A.R. Johnson High School) through the Augusta Partnership for Children, Inc.
