Mentor a child 

MACH Academy is looking for mentors and tutors to work with youth.

The academy is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that provides academic tutoring, promotes computer literacy, nutrition and healthy eating, chess techniques and fitness and tennis instruction for youth ages 3-18.

The programs are designed to offer children a positive influence they might not otherwise have. Volunteers are needed to mentor students one-on-one and in small group settings, to assist with homework, school projects, and to provide computer, chess, tennis or fitness instruction.

Sears in Augusta Mall will play host to a Family and Friends Night from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 12.

The event will include a back-to-school fashion show, live DJ, dancers, live music, prize giveaways every half hour and more.

The Georgia Sales Tax Holiday is this weekend.

Friday and Saturday, no tax will be charged for clothing, footwear, computers and related accessories and general school supplies.

Clothing and footwear must be less than $100 per article or pair, excluding accessories. Computers and supplies are limited to items with a price tag of $1,000 or less, and school supplies are limited to $20 per item.

A sales tax holiday will also be held Oct. 5-7 for purchases of energy-efficient and water-efficient products that will be used for noncommercial use that have a sales price of $1,500 or less per product.

During August, admission to the Augusta Museum of History is only a dollar.

Exhibits include regional history; Local Legends, a display of Augusta’s celebrities; and Hunt for History, a scavenger hunt through Augusta’s history.

The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

A back-to-school clinic will be held at the Frank M. Rumph Richmond County Health Department Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Children can receive immunizations with a 3231 form; hearing, vision and dental screenings with a 3300 form and nutrition screening.

The child’s shot record and Medicaid or State of Georgia Cigna or United Care card must be presented, if applicable.

The Astronomy Club of Augusta will hold an Astronomy Movie Night at the Ruth Patrick Science Center in Aiken.

The movies will be IMAX Hubble, which follows the Space Shuttle Atlantis as it embarks on a mission to make repairs and upgrades to the Hubble Space Telescope. Lunar observations will follow the movie. Bring binoculars, telescopes or planispheres.
