Walk-in auditions for the Fox 54 Augusta Idol will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and will end promptly at 5 p.m. at the Augusta Mall lower level near Macy’s.
Five finalists will be chosen by a two-judge panel and perform before a live audience at 6 p.m.
Five finalists will also be chosen from online entries submitted at HD 98.3 online, www.hd983.com, and five will be chosen from submissions at www.wfxg.com. Those finalists will be notified Friday morning and will need to be at the Augusta Mall no later than 5 p.m. Saturday. Those 10 finalists will also peform before a live audience at 6 p.m.
The winner will be chosen by text votes from the audience. The winner will go to a guaranteed audition to perform before the American Idol producers in New Orleans on July 17. Fox 54 will pay for the airfare and hotel accomodations.

The Aiken-Augusta Audubon Society will conduct a field trip to count butterflies at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The count will be conducted all day, but volunteers can choose to participate in the morning from 9 to noon or afternoon from 1 to 5.
The Georgia team will meet at 9 a.m. in the parking area at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park on Lock and Dam Road. Lunch will be at noon, and then the team will go to Merry Ponds and Lover’s Lane for the afternoon count.

The Spanish American War/Santiago Day Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Magnolia Cemetery on Third Street.
The service will be conducted by the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans. It will commemorate the 1147th annivesary of the surrender of the Spanish forces defending Santiago de Cuba to the United States Army, and the memory of all veterans of the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection and the China Relief Expedition. The Augusta Southern Nationals Night of Fire will be held at 7 p.m. July 20 at the Augusta Commons. Enthusiasts can come to the free event and see the drag boats up close. The races will be held Saturday and Sunday.
