Honor society

Danielle Hernandez, of Augusta, was recognized by the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Hernandez, daughter of Paula Wellman, of Augusta, and Russ Hernandez, of Winter Springs, Fla., was inducted into the blue Key Honor Society. She is a fourth-year student majoring in wildlife.

Study exchange

Jamie Quarles was selected to travel to Turkey as a team member for the Group Study Exchange program. The team left May 5 and will return June 3. He is the assistant basketball coach at Augusta State University.

Dean's list

Two Washington and Lee University students from Augusta have earned dean’s list status for the recently ended winter 2012 term. They are Collier McLeod and William Salley. Dean’s list status at represents a term grade-average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Student awards

The following students at Armstrong Atlantic State University were honored during the spring Student Awards Convocation held in Savannah, Ga.:

Kristen Sprauve Harris, of Augusta, received the Gender and Women’s Studies’ Jill Miller Outstanding Student Award.

Matthew Motes, of Augusta, received the President’s Cup Award.

Teachers academy

Kathy Buurma, fourth-grade teacher at Westminster Schools of Augusta, was selected from more than 1,000 teachers nationwide to attend the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J.

Buurma is one of 200 third- through fifth-grade teachers from around the country selected to attend the one-week, all-expense-paid professional development program this summer.
