The renovation of the historic Tubman School on Walton Way already shows signs of the future.
The former middle school will reopen in September as Tubman Educational Center, a school for "alternative learning options," said Lou Svehla, the spokesman for the Richmond County Board of Education.
The projected cost of the renovation is $10.2 million, which is being paid for with money from the special purpose local option sales tax. While new windows and some demolition are visible from the street, Svehla said that floors, air conditioning and other areas inside are being brought up to date.
The renovated structure will house students who have fallen behind, dropped out or want to go to night school.
Svehla said that because classes are being taught at Bungalow Alternative School while the renovation takes place, there is a waiting list for prospective students.
"This will certainly be more technologically advanced, and it will be much bigger," he said.
Also, while work has recently begun on the main building, the new gym on the backside has already been completed.
