Hill, an advisory board member for the Salvation Army of Augusta, is one of many volunteers who help with the annual Red Kettle Campaign.

"It's the greatest experience you can have during Christmas," he said. "I enjoy being out there. Not only do people put money in the kettle, they also thank us for what we're doing and for what the Salvation Army is doing. Sometimes, we even have people tell us about their experiences with the Salvation Army and how it made their Christmas complete."

Bob Richards Sr., also an advisory board member and volunteer bell ringer, shared similar feelings.

"It's always a thrill," he said. "You get such a warm and friendly feeling from the people who pass you by. It's always an inspiration to see those who contribute."

The annual Red Kettle Campaign kicked off Nov. 11 and will continue through Dec. 24. More than 25 locations in the Augusta area have bell ringers and red kettles this year.

"When people see red kettles, they think of Christmas. They think of the Salvation Army," Hill said.

"That is probably one of the things I remember most about Christmas growing up in Aiken. You always saw red kettles."

The money raised in the campaign goes to fund the Salvation Army's programs, said Richards.

"We all have a responsibility to help those who don't have the standard of living that we have enjoyed," he said. "That's what Christmas is all about."

Though the campaign is underway, there are still opportunities for the community to volunteer.

People may volunteer as individuals or as groups for as little as one four-hour shift or as much as an entire day or several days. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

"Anybody can ring the bell," said Richards. "It takes no physical skill level, just a smile."
