With new babies, there's no instruction manual on what, how or when to do different things.
That's why groups such as Moms Connection are so important, especially for first-time mothers, said Teresa McCullen, the group facilitator for the weekly support group for new mothers and their babies. The group is sponsored by Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics.
"The goal is to have a place where mothers can come, feel comfortable and get out of the house and socialize," McCullen said. "It's also a place where they can get information on topics related to them, babies and family. The best part is that they can bring their baby with them."
During the weekly meetings, the moms share their experiences, ask questions and offer support to one another. They can also weigh their babies and get information from guest speakers.
Discussion topics have included post-partum depression, breast-feeding, sleeping issues, infant massage, infant signing, nutrition, women's health and the importance of reading and play.
While a lot of the information is focused on the baby, they also take time to talk about the moms. They let them share how they are feeling about their self-image and tell them how to manage their time to minimize stress, McCullen said.
The meetings are something Nicole Gutierrez looks forward to attending with her 9-month-old daughter, Marcelina.
"I really enjoy it," she said. "I listen and learn so much from the other mothers and Teresa. It makes me feel at ease knowing that I'm not the only one who has questions or concerns. I feel like I can ask anything and can e-mail Teresa whenever I have questions."
Trekesha Mitchell said it's comforting to have a place to come and talk with other moms, and with McCullen.
"I needed an outlet to be around other mothers for support because I don't have family here," said the mother of a 4-month-old daughter, Dyarah. "It's a way of coping with the task of being a new mom, and it's a social outlet."
The group is open to new mothers and their babies, and it's not a requirement that the baby was delivered at MCG to participate. Attendance is free, and no registration is required.
