Fans, celebrities attend 'Get On Up' events

Long after the Red Carpet rolled up at Regal Cinemas, celebration of Thursday’s Get On Up screening continued throughout Richmond County.

Members of James Brown’s family, as well as actors and fans, took part in the sold out afterparty at the Augusta Museum of History, while more than 100 guests attended the after-after party at Legends Club on Washington Road.

“Everyone started getting to the movie theatre around 4:30 p.m. and here we are almost eight hours later still celebrating,” Jonavon Stephens, president of Aquarius Vision, said. “I’m so proud of our city for the support they showed today and hopefully this is the first of many events to come.”

Even though Darrell and Vontice Jackson didn’t attend the movie screening, the Augusta natives made sure not to miss the Legends Club party.

“What a great night for this city,” Darrell Jackson said. “It means a lot to be able to meet and hang out with so many people…We’re just proud to be a part of it.”

For Vontice Jackson, her night peaked with an introduction to actor Keith Robinson.

Robinson – a Lakeside High graduate – played ‘Baby Roy’, a member of James Brown’s band.

“I couldn’t believe how nice and down-to-earth he was,” she said. “I started asking him all these questions and he was just so kind and fun to be around.”

When asked about the premiere, Robinson’s focus turned to Augusta’s youth.

“I came from this area,” he said. “I grew up off Washington Road and I want to show kids in Richmond County that they can make it to Hollywood and do what I’ve done. Overall, today was very, very special. Augusta’s known for a lot of things, including the Masters, but there are a lot of great artists from here and to be included in that group is such an honor.”

It's nice that no shots were fired at the premiere.
