Firefighters who responded to the Amherst neighborhood near Grovetown just after 2 p.m., found flames already shooting through the roof of the house at in the 4000 block of Clifden Avenue, according to Columbia County Fire Battalion Chief Anthony Lovett.
Lovett said it took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain the blaze. They were able to save a child’s crib and a few other items, but the family’s other belongings and the house were a total loss, Lovett said.
Antonio Norris said he was at home with his girlfriend and two children – a 4-week-old daughter and a 1-year-old son – when they heard a loud “boom.” He went to investigate and found the kitchen door in flames.
Norris said he made a brief attempt to extinguish the fire before evacuating his family to a neighbor’s house and calling 911. No one was injured, authorities said.
Lovett said the Red Cross was assisting the family with shelter and necessities. He said it was too soon to comment on the origin of the fire, but it appeared to be accidental. A fire investigator was called to the scene to determine what caused the blaze.
