Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

HEADS UP EVERYONE traveling through the Gracewood community on Peach Orchard Road. Between the railroad tracks and Byrd Road several persons either pedestrians of those on bicycles have been hit by vehicles in recent years.

TO ADD TO THE comment regarding local TV news, the local radio news has issues, as well. I’ve heard them giving personal opinions about the president and other political situations (I’m not an Obama fan but these were pretty low). You have a great program without all of this, so stick with the family-friendly format and it’s all good!

I LIKE DRAG RACING like many other people but, for you guys out in south Richmond/north Burke County unloading those cars off trailers with uncapped headers Saturday night on the back road. That was a bit much.

RANT TO THE COLUMBIA County Commission. The school board builds schools, but the commission never funds for sidewalks (children’s safety). They use SPLOST discretionary funds for their pet projects. Bottom line: Pet projects funded and children’s safety zero. Been sending e-mails to Mr. Cross and Mr. Thigpen for two years.

I WOULD LIKE TO rant about government agencies not doing enough background checking before hiring. One of the government-funded child protective agencies has a case worker who had to use political pull several years ago to keep her own children. Ironic - isn’t it?

WISH YOUR WORKPLACE dress code article addressed attire in our local hospitals. Either supervisors don’t care, don’t want to be confronted by indignant employees, or they just feel other things need their energy. Long fake fingernails and eyelashes, multi-colored hair, and ill-fitting or low-cut uniforms are all unprofessional especially in patient care.

RAVE FOR THE editorial about the real crisis, June 23, Obama’s plans to create a socialist America. If you haven’t read it yet, you should. It effects every one of us. People are finally admitting this is what’s going on. We cannot continue to sit and wait. It is here.

WE NEED SOMEONE to turn the pound into a department that will save animals, not kill them. People are offering help. What is wrong with this picture?

Okay, the long nails and low-cut clothing I can understand. Yes, it's unprofessional. But what does someone's lashes or hair color have to do with anything? Maybe just not your personal preference? And you need to leave a clear definition of "ill-fitting" when it comes to clothing.

Typical hair color probably isn't what this ranter is talking about. Some of these bright, fluorescent, rainbow colors do however, present a picture of unprofessionalism in many's eyes.

I feel the same way about tattoos; I would not hire someone in a customer facing position that had an abundance of visible tattoos, and none at all with them on their neck. Nor visible facial piercings. That is just me.

They have every right to decorate their bodies in any way they wish; but I have a right as an employer to set standards of dress.

Drag Racing

Drag racing in the South. I'd like to see those Oklahoma City boys show up here. I’ll have to roll out my 1970 426 hemi, Dodge Challenger, 600 horsepower, 5 speed trans and Dana 60 rear end. (I just made that up. It’s a fantasy of mine.)

being professional

I get what the ranter is saying. In healthcare there is no place for the staff to be dressed like they're going to the club. Most hospitals have dress codes which clearly define what is acceptable in the patient care areas and this does not include the long fake nails and unnatural hair colors (I've seen it written this way). There are long fake lashes and then there are some that are so big and fake-y thick that they look tacky. Yes, it's my opinion but certain professions have a standard and/or expectation by both management and customers to present a certain way and like it or not, nursing and other similar tasks are one of them. Also no one wants to see someone's cleavage hanging out of a uniform nor the pants so tight they pull way down when bending and working. I've also seen fishnet hose, staff wearing clothes best suited for teenagers and not middle aged women, and heels significantly higher than should be allowed, all in work areas in hospitals. But I can't really blame the staff for all of these "policy violations", because if their bosses don't enforce the rules, why should they? It's all about attitude and professionalism, significantly decreased in recent times, along with so much else in our culture today.

radio

Re: the rant re: radio comments. In other markets, such as Atlanta, if such comments are made that might be considered offensive to the listeners, or if errors in delivery are made-I've heard a few gaffs on the morning show they are posting about-these guys are let go. Maybe no one complains and/or maybe it's felt that if you don't like it, don't listen. There's a difference to me though between listening to a known opinion/talk show format and trying to get the news, even if the majority of the hosts on the different shows are presenting an opinion. I can't imaging the tv announcers inserting their opinions on the news they're delivering, aside from some a little expression of sympathy or support when a story warrants, but not much past that.

Still happening/hard to believe

ISLAMABAD —
The father of a pregnant Pakistani woman who was stoned to death and four other men have been charged with killing her after she married against the family's wishes and their trial was set to begin on Monday, police said.

Farzana Parveen, 25, was killed May 27 before a crowd of onlookers near a downtown courthouse in the eastern city of Lahore. A mob beat her with bricks and killed her as she was on her way to court to contest an abduction case her family had filed against her husband.

A Pakistani court indicted her father, two brothers, a cousin and a man who claimed he had been married to Parveen on charges of murder and torture on Saturday. All five men pleaded not guilty, according to Mian Zulfiqar, the police investigator.

The trial will begin on Monday when the court has called on prosecution witnesses to appear, said Zulfiqar. He said police and doctors who conducted the autopsy of the victim would be among those testifying. "We have a strong case against the suspects but it is
up to the court how to take view of our investigation," he said.

Wake up please

Yesterday a truck was hijacked in Mexico. The radio active cargo was stolen. This radio active cargo could be used to build a dirty bomb.

The Emperor has made our border with Mexico more porous than ever.

Am I the only one that sees a potential problem here? What could possibly go wrong?

speaking as a nurse who has

speaking as a nurse who has worked in hospitals: i know what a real workload patient care is... i had to gown up, glove up, mask up for a lot of patient care, so the long nails and the makeup would have just been incredibly stupid. also: the places i worked in had DRESS REGULATIONS, as well as the infection control people breathing down our necks about every little thing: long fingernails were a big fat no-no and if you had 'em and wanted to work where i did, you got rid of 'em. now i look at long fingernails and think: BACTERIA BREEDERS!! they really are nasty things, those long nails. the makeup, the hair color, the low cut scrubs: no time for that, either, in patient care. patient care requires common sense and attention to detail, not worrying whether you look really hot and are catching the eye of some big-bucks doctor. i can tell you one thing: those that showed up to work dressed for glam and all dolled up didn't do that much patient care and generally found a way to slack off so they didn't have to muss up their 'do, smear their makeup, or wrinkle their designer scrubs.

When I'm sick, I don't care

When I'm sick, I don't care how my nurses dress. I care about the level of care that I am given. What color their hair is, how their eyelashes look- doesn't matter. As for the long nails, I've never seen a nurse with long nails, because they puncture the gloves, and nurses aren't interested in acquiring hepatitis, HIV, or a staph infection. And if it's the clerical staff, who cares?

For corn's sake, Roadkill, the container that was stolen was had material that was used to make industrial products, not bombs, and it's been recovered.

Please, just enjoy the beautiful day that the Lord has created, and stop fretting.

Dress codes

When I watch the old movies (30's, 40's), it's hard to believe we have come so far from decency.
As for the nails, when I was in culinary school and barber school, long nails were not allowed because of the bacteria that gets trapped under the nails. Unless you take a scrub brush and anti-bacterial soap you cannot get what's under the nails out with just an ordinary hand washing.
Imagine someone with 3" nails making you a sandwich or kneading your pizza dough.

I will never understand this

Marry a guy in prison & he has killed women..

LIMA, Peru (AP) - Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, married his pregnant Peruvian girlfriend Friday in a ceremony at the maximum-security prison where he is serving 28 years for murdering a woman he met in a Lima casino.

Van der Sloot, 26, wed Leidy Figueroa, 24, in a private ceremony. Prison officials prohibited video and photos during the midday nuptials and none of the groom's relatives attended, said his attorney, Maximo Altez.

Wearing a tailored suit and dress shoes sent by his mother, Van der Sloot told his bride, who is seven months pregnant, that after he is released from prison, "'I want to marry you again,' and she told him the same," said John Barrera, who officiated the wedding as mayor of the city of Ancon, where the prison is located.

When I was a junior in

When I was a junior in highschool in a suburb of Sacramento Calif, I got a nice gold, '57 Chevy Bel Air. Wish I had it today - anyway back then we had a lot of wide open roads and took full advantage to drag race and then gather at the local drive in, which was called the Eat and Run. We didn't have all the fast food places back then. That was probably a good thing.
All the guys would find cheap used cars that needed some "mechanicking", help each other get them running, soup them up and we were off to the races. Ah, the good old days

hoptoad, you should watch the movies that were made prior to 1934, when the Hays decency code came in.

They are HUMDINGERS, TCM shows them on a regular basis, they have all the greats like Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford. They are racy and juicy and spicy and just the best.

Seenit, those women that marry those men, to put it bluntly, have bats in the belfry.

Just like the ones that married the Night Stalker, the Menendez brothers, and all of the others who have committed vicious murders and that are on Death Row.

Ranter #2

Are you for real? Keep the talk shows "family-friendly"? So all the talk show hosts should only talk about lollipops and roses and forget we have a country in peril. There are many other people out there like you that need to be educated about what is happening to our freedoms.

People like you are part of the reason we are going to Hades in a handbasket. Go ahead and keep you head in the sand, then cry, pee and moan when you pull it out and realize you're living in Cuba.

These ole birds are in their 80s....skin so stretched that we are seeing their chest skin on their face now...both of them can't speak worth a toot...why is it so hard for oldies to go out to pasture>. A defensive Rant for Michelle Obama

The comments by aging Joan Rivers about Michelle Obama where totally out of line.

It is one thing to disagree with a person on Political & Moral lines but such personal attacks just to restart a career, or to gain Media Attention are totally unwarranted.

Maybe it is time for the 81y/o Ms. Rivers retire and save what is left of her fans.

Corgi, honest to God

I try to like you because you are intelligent. But you do spout so much of your own opinion. Just had a visit with my 10 year old grandson who announced his superlative IQ. Thankfully he has not skipped grades.. My husband said, welcomed to the rest of us. He was bright, but the key is to keep him able to deal with others.

You mentioned that you skipped 2 grades. We planned the birth of our children to be the oldest possible in their class. Maturity when going to college was important. Saw too many cases of immature college students. Also it was helpful since our boys played sports. They needed the full maturity allotment.

Oh, we planned for boys and we planned their birth dates as close as we could the natural way. They were born the month we wanted, exactly the 2 years apart, except the first one was born 8 days early, thankfully. He weighed over 8 pounds.

Neither have health problems.
