Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

THE FOURTH OF JULY should remind us once again that this really is the greatest country on earth. It stays that way because we are free to pursue happiness. Free to worship the way we want. Free to express ourselves in forums such as this one.

A RAVE FOR THE person who turned in my grandmother’s wallet at the Lowe’s on Peach Orchard Road. Thank you for your honesty and God bless you!

AS A VIETNAM VET, hearing all the negative talk about the VA hospital system I want to say that the VA hospital here in Augusta and the VA Hospital in Nashville Tenn. have taken very good care of me. In March 2012 I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, if not for the VA I would not be here today. My thanks go to all of the staff in Hemo/Oncology at Charlie Norwood VA in Augusta and the Vanderbilt University/ Nashville VA Transplant Team for a great job well done. Thank You!

IN REGARD TO THE charitable labor contributed by Jim Crowell, owner/operator of Lawn Enforcement on Pisgah Road, North Augusta, and Jonathan Brantley, owner/ operator of Atomic Road Deer Processing: After the ice storm, these fellows picked up and properly disposed of debris for at least a solid week. Especially for those of us too aged or infirm to do that work, ourselves. They would NOT accept ANY compensation for their labor, gasoline, etc. Kudos.

A HUGE RAVE TO Allen Cross from Cool Ray Heating and Air. For seven years we have had problems with our A/C going out; usually happened twice a year. Several people have come out to look at it but never could fix it. We were going to have the whole unit replaced. Allen came out and saw that the blade in the outside unit was installed upside down. A simple fix that saved us thousands of dollars. Thanks so much, Cool Ray Heating and Air!

THIS RAVE IS FOR the manager at Ryan’s on Peach Orchard Road. Thank you, thank you for providing ice for the World Changers when our (Fleming Baptist Church) ice machine decided to stop making ice. We had over 200 hot teens and adults that had worked outside all day. You said yes without a hesitation. Thank you.

YOU KEEP ASKING God to bless America, and you are already blessed. Be thankful. You have plenty of food, plenty of clothes, and a job. You are already blessed, so give God the praise and glory and stop being so mean to one another.

RAVE FOR THE LADY who wrote article on buyer beware on homes. I commend her.

I THINK TIGER WOODS should have played his first golf game in several months against Lucy Li. She is so much cuter than him and doesn’t have an oversized opinion of herself! She could beat him!

Bravo #1

We are indeed fortunate to be living in a country that allows the freedoms that we enjoy. This is not the only country that an individual or group can enjoy these freedoms but it is the one we live in so, please, let us do the right thing.
By the right thing I mean let us exercise our right to vote. So often we see where a 40% turnout is considered a success. This should be higher.
And let us please remember that no matter where we live in this country that we are all Americans. People have died to defend the right for us to call ourselves that. Let us never forget those individuals.
Celebrate the 4th in a safe and sober manner. If you can't do the latter then please stay at home and off the roads.

July 4th a time America comes together

I wonder if President Obama will be playing golf, in Hawaii or flying off the the Middle East or Europe this time.

Because it does seem he misses more of the American Patriot type Federal holidays.

Braves' Games

I only watch Braves' games when Evan Gattis is playing. There are so many factors at work watching him. Common guy with troubles does well, etc. Plus, he's such an insightful person who remembers those times before he was an MLB star. He makes a fraction of what others make. Tell the Braves' pitchers to show him respect. Especially Mike Minor. He could easily deck you.

Corgi how about a visit to

Corgi how about a visit to Arlington National Cemetary. An appearance at the national mall and a celebration of our freedom. In the past our Presidents have been visible on these important holidays, as they should. I remember many a president throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game. No this would be too much for him...I will say no more

I see Our CRACKEL BARREL accused thief walked clean

It took a almost 2 years for the trial slowly (likely a planned delay) to roll around.

The Time and delays allowed things to quiet down about failing to return a $10,000+/- diamond Ring.

Time for the court house steps words from some hired Preacher spewing Racial remarks, to die down.

Time for a few friends in the Legal circles to maybe work some wonders?

Seriously who knows MAYBE even some side deals with the DA in the Future?

Top this off with a well planned politically safe planned NEWS Release, over a 3 day Major Holiday weekend.

An we are told all it took was "SHOWING REMORSE" given all the evidence against her?

If you and I tried "SHOWING REMORSE" as a defense we get to know the inside of The Webster Center on Phinizy Rd. for keeping hiding and taking a $10,000.00 ring to a PAWN SHOP that wasn't ours.

But I will monitor the cases she handles and the W/L ratios in the future. I quietly monitor her career and to see where this "SHOWING REMORSE" get us. Her name like 2nd chancers will be added to my database for my Web crawler to monitor.

BUT NOTE: The case was only dismissed, She WAS NOT FOUND INNOCENT.

So YES IT CAN BE BROUGHT BACK UP and still taken to trial IF a higher court smells the stink and the statue of limitations for the charge have not run out or possible case related charges either..

Well Columbia Co. welcome to a new form Equal Justice.

BTW: When was or will the Columbia Co. DA re-elected?

"To celebrate the holiday,

"To celebrate the holiday, the President and First Lady are inviting military heroes and their families to the White House tomorrow for a special Independence Day event, including a USO program featuring Grammy award-winning recording artist Pitbull."

I don't see a problem with this, noc noc or Airman. Going to Arlington? That's done on Veterans' Day or Memorial Day, that's the day we honor our dead. In fact, Arlington wasn't even around in 1776.

As for throwing out a baseball- that has always been just the silliest thing, I have never understood that. But maybe that's not done any more because of security reasons, ever think of that?

Go to the National Mall? So that it can be roped off, people couldn't enjoy it, and it would tie up traffic for miles around, how is that a good idea?

Sure, let's have him go somewhere on the Fourth, let's pay lots and lots of Secret Service men overtime holiday pay, let's take the President and the Secret Service men away from their families so that they can't enjoy the holiday, and all of that because of....what? Let's have his appearance cost thousands and thousands of dollars, so then people can complain about how he wastes tazpayer money for a PR event.

Thank you Airman ---

The President by running for office understood that he would be expected to attend certain "Public" functions on certain Holidays.

It is part of the job.

Over the years he has pawned off a number to others.

Thus by doing so he has shown disrespect.

Doing it the NEXT DAY instead on the Holiday is no different.

Oh, for Pete's sake. When he

Oh, for Pete's sake.

When he goes somewhere, you criticize him for spending taxpayer money. When he stays home, you criticize him for that too.

But when Reagan got shot, it changed everything. It has nothing to do with disrespect and everything to do with security.

Remember the assassination attempts against Ford, when he was in that mob of people? Do you see presidents doing that any more?

Sadly, the world has changed.

Peaceful 4th of July

My father served in WWII and the Korean War. Thankfully, he came home to us safe and of sound mind. May all the family members be as blessed as my family was. I did lose other family members who served in those two wars and the Vietnam War. My prayers and kind thoughts go to all families who have lost loved ones. I, as well as all Americans, appreciate and are thankful to all our brave and wonderful military members.

The complaints about the prez

The complaints about the prez going places are because he is usually going on numerous vacations, campaigning and fund raising for all the democrat sycophants, or otherwise making a lot of unnecessary trips, even flying to different locations just to play golf.

We don't complain when he is making legitimate trips to fulfill his presidential duties.

I do agree, Corgimom, that security has become an issue, you do make some good points. Places like malls are not a good idea and at times, people get aggravated when there are traffic tie-ups and disruptions in business. However, for legitimate trips, this prez has many more bodyguards and other means of security than any other president ever had.

Boy thanks for the education on Arlington, I was sure that Columbus brought it on the Mayflower. I do know about Veterans Day as well as Memorial Day, just saying not a bad idea. Your comment about baseball just shows that you don't really understand what you read. The great American sport...baseball , hotdogs, apple pie are all part of an American tradition, but so it, I am sure in your infinite wisdom you will critique and correct my wrong doings. America, I love this country

Throwing Out First Pitch

“As for throwing out a baseball- that has always been just the silliest thing, I have never understood that. But maybe that's not done any more because of security reasons, ever think of that?”

I will never forget George W. Bush throwing the ball to our own Todd Greene in Yankee Stadium after 9-11. Many thought it was too dangerous for him to throw out the first pitch, but he threw a hard, perfect strike to Todd. I knew we would be okay after that.

Riverman, it washed off

Riverman, it washed off because he didn't prep the surface like he was supposed to, or he used junk paint, or it was spoiled. Or all three.

Paint won't adhere to glossy surfaces or dirt or bare spots.

Some painters cut corners like that, because people don't want to pay for the intensive labor that a quality paint job really needs.

Our trim needs painting, because we put siding on the house and now it doesn't match. We are expecting it to cost around $1,000. Our house is 2 story, 1600 sq ft and a garage. And we can do the garage doors ourselves. And that's just labor, we will supply the paint, because we know what we want.

People like to put gloss paint on the trim, because it looks better and holds up better. But then that means lots of prep in the future. And if you want a paint to really adhere and hold up, you need top-of-the-line paint, that has lots and lots of acrylics in it, even with flat paint. You also need top-of-the-line primer, because the cheap stuff is worthless.

Once they took the lead out of paint, without a high level of acrylics in it, you might as well paint your house with colored water.

You should also look at the label and see what the percentage of water is. People pay outrageous amounts of money for paint that is mostly water, that's a total waste of money.

What many people don't know is that before you buy paint, you should make the salesperson open each can and you should smell the paint. If it smells like ammonia, don't buy it, it's spoiled, the latex has decomposed in it.

And paint has a manufacturing code and lot number on the bottom of the can. If the paint is more than a few months old, don't buy it, make them bring you fresh stock from the stock room. And it should be made on the same day out of the same lot.

Latex is an organic compound and it deteriorates quickly, especially when it's on a truck or sitting in a hot stock room.

You should also supervise your painter. You want to watch carefully to make sure that they don't water it down or switch paint on you. They have to thin it a little if they are using a sprayer, but not by much.

Hope this helps.

Airman, it used to be safe

Airman, it used to be safe for a President to go to a baseball stadium and throw out a pitch.

It's not any more. And it has nothing to do with apple pie, hot dogs, the Fourth of July, or anything else. It has nothing to do with disrespect.

It has to do with evil people who want to assassinate Presidents. It has to do with the impossibility of protecting a President that is a sitting duck on a pitcher's mound.

Imagine the coup if somebody could assassinate a US President on the Fourth of July.

That's not a President's fault.

It's a sad commentary on how expectations have had to change. The good old days are just that- the good old days, and is not the reality of today.

Do you remember how President Ford used to go into crowds, shaking hands, and then those two nutcases tried to shoot him?

They don't do that any more, either.

I remember when people used

I remember when people used to be able to go to concerts and stadiums and college football games, Disneyland, places like that and not worry. You went up to the ticket window, bought a ticket, and went in.

Now, you go through a metal detector. Then you are wanded. Then all of your belongings are searched. To see a baseball game. Or a concert.

All because there have been idiots that don't know how to behave and have spoiled it for everybody else.
