HOW WONDERFUL OF Starbucks to offer health care for even their part-time workers and now educational benefits, too. It shows that not every company making millions of dollars in profits has to be greedy and refuse to raise salaries or offer health care. When such millionaire profiteers refuse to do right by workers and falsely blame the Affordable Care Act, they are showing they do not deserve the business that made them millionaires.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to the people who helped us on Laney-Walker Boulevard. You guys were driving a black Jeep, and we were in a red Cavalier. Our car wouldn’t start and you helped us out. Thank you very much; our family truly appreciates it. It is nice to know that people will stop and help without asking. Have a great day!

WHEN OUR SON was in the fifth grade, he was made to stand in the hall for chewing gum. Our president chewed gum throughout the D-Day memorial service at Sword Beach in France, and Secretary Hagel’s aide chewed gum at the hearing on the Taliban prisoner exchange. Is this a new custom of showing disdain? How very inconsiderate.

MY HUSBAND HAD a stroke June 2. I would like to give a big thank you to the Martinez emergency team, University Hospital doctors and nurses in the emergency room and ICU. Kathy and Sheila, his nurses, were especially appreciated.

THIS PINEHURST GOLF course looks like it is in about the same condition as The Patch here in Augusta. The PGA and Pinehurst should be ashamed to have such a prestigious golf tournament on such a dog track.

WRDW SAID a number of our veterans had been waiting for 10 years for service at the Augusta VA. I find it hard to believe, without their showing the proof or evidence, that veterans of our armed forces would stand by and allow themselves to be abused for 10 years without contacting their congressional member. Please look into this and post the evidence if you can find it.

EVERYBODY SHOULD BE brief. Some of the Rants & Raves are getting too long.

IF I WERE LOCKED up at Guantanamo for no reason other than suspicion of being a terrorist and spent years under those conditions, when I got out, I would seek revenge also. We are creating those monsters, most of them.

Fast growing defense sector!!

MacAulay-Brown recently announced the company will open a new office in the Augusta Exchange(Atrium Building off Wheeler road) area..

Another defense contractor will be entering the market next week... The leaders of Augusta have to create similar live, work, and play environments near Fort Gordon... The Tobacco/Deans Bridge(Kroger shopping center) and Jimmie Dyess/Gordon Hwy(Publix shopping center) corridors should resemble the Augusta Exchange area..

Obama Latte

The first rant is saying if you own a business and don't support Obamacare, you don't deserve to keep your business. It's fine if the owners, the stockholders, of Starbucks want to give scholarships and health care to its workers, but those measures shouldn't be forced on others in a free market. In many cases they would bankrupt the business. Of course the ranter probably doesn't view America as having a free market, but as a socialist state where profits don't matter.

BREAKING NEWS

Virginia's Republican legislators broke into Givernor's office to block Medicaid expansion coverage for poor. So the Republican House Speaker William J. Howell authorized security to illegally enter the Governor's office during a holiday break to ensure the clock started ticking before the Governor even knew the bill was delivered.

Is there anything the Republicans won't do to harm the 47% ?

Just this weekend, Georgia
Unpublished

Just this weekend, Georgia Gov. Deal was spotted palling around with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

When Huckabee expressed concern that the two being spotted together might hurt Deal's reelection bid, Deal said " You helped me get there in the first place."

Last Thursday, Huckabee - who Nathan Deal calls a "good friend" - compared the Republican fight against gay marriage equality to fighting against Nazi Germany.

So it begins here too!

Potential 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had some critical words for Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry regarding his recent comparison of homosexuality and alcoholism.

When asked about Perry’s comments during a Wednesday talk to promote her book at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre, Clinton suggested that he be held to a higher standard, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"We're living in a time of real political angst," she said. "There's a lot of work to be done, and I believe it's going to come down to people demanding that those who hold public office start making evidence-based decisions again."

Just be brief you say!

DID I SAY THAT??? Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words:
'Give me all your money or I'll shoot', the man shouted, 'that's not what I said!'.

OOPS

NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED!!! In Modesto , CA , Steven Richard King was arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket. (hellooooooo)!

THe best one!!

THE GRAND FINALE!!! Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard.

NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE…

Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer!

Baby boy I think the real

Baby boy I think the real issue is why is the governor trying to pull an Obama and side step the legislative branch =illegally to expand medicaid. It's crazy because if he forces it through as a new governor he will create a constitutional crisis and likely become a lame duck governor. I think we see the SCOTUS is 100% support of limiting the executive branch with balance as written in the constitution. This age of executive expansion will be met with resistance.

The Secret To Starbucks' Success....

...Long ago and far away, when I was a beginning beer drinker, it cost a nickel more for a Budweiser draft in a bar than for most other beers. It cost a dime more for Michelob. Both Budweiser and Michelob were Anheuser Busch products.

Their marketing strategy was simple, but brilliant. Ordering a Budweiser, or Michelob, instead of one of the "cheap" alternatives was proof of a man's good taste, financial success, and general "coolness." It was a highly successful strategy and made Anheuser Busch a LOT of money. Still does. There are still people who believe Budweiser and Michelob to be the mark of a man who has good taste. Not so much around here, maybe, but around St. Louis and much of the mid-west, for sure.

I think Starbucks has employed the Budweiser model. It's not that their coffee is so good, it's that it's "cool" to go to Starbucks. Turns out, it's pretty expensive too and that brings me to the point....Starbucks makes a LOT of money. The more they can entice people into thinking how "cool" they are by paying high benefits and supporting Obamacare, the more they can attract customers who are driven by convincing others how "cool," sophisticated, and enlightened they are.

It's why many/most Hollywood stars are cool and enlightened too. They can claim to weally, weally care about the little guy, while stuffing their pockets with the cash the sheep are willing to throw at them just to prove they are weally, weally cool and enlightened as well.

EPA?? Stop pooping in hallway whatttttt!

Federal employees at the Environmental Protection Agency have been instructed to stop defecating in the hallway of a regional office in Denver, Colo., according to an internal e-mail obtained by Government Executive.

In a staff email earlier this year, Deputy Regional Administrator Howard Cantor warned of "several" inappropriate bathroom "incidents" in the building, including paper towel-clogged toilets and "an individual placing feces in the hallway" outside the restroom.

"Management is taking this situation very seriously and will take whatever actions are necessary to identify and prosecute these individuals," Cantor wrote in his email, asking any employee with knowledge of the individual's identity to notify management.

Too bad they didn't dump whoopi

In a move that signaled yet another major shakeup on "The View," co-host Sherri Shepherd announced Thursday night that she was leaving the show after seven years, and Jenny McCarthy appeared to confirm that she was also stepping down after just one season.

The moves leave Whoopi Goldberg as the program's sole remaining host.

Youth Symphony

Last night was my daughter's final performance, at least the one I will get to see. She and her mom will travel to London and Paris tomorrow along with 72 other young Bay Area musicians to give performances of mostly American music. By American I mean tunes from "West Side Story", "Stars and Stripes Forever", etc.
That means son and I will be by ourselves for a week. It should be a good week for us (no critics).
In last nights performance the encore was "New York, New York". I was kind of hoping it would be "Dixie".
Their signature musical piece is a little known medley called "Etude de D. Clarke un le Chau Nuits, in F major". It basically is a medley of hits from Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts. You know, stuff like "Roly Poly", "Two Old Maids", and the classic "Nuts, Hot Nuts". I think the Europeans will be impressed.

USS Augusta

While listening to the D-Day broadcast from June 6, 1944 from WEAF radio in New York, there was mention of a battleship USS Augusta. I researched on Expedia and found out that it was one of three naval vessels named after the city of Augusta, Ga.
The ship was commissioned in 1931 and decommissioned in 1946. It also served as the flagship for FDR and Truman in addition to it's participation on D-Day.
Also in the article was a note that the ship was sponsored by Evelyn McDaniel, who was an Augustan. Does anyone know who this person was or anything about her family?

I'll send this to Bill Kirby. Maybe he can research it for one of his videos or columns.
FYI. The vast majority of our old papers (1792-2003) are available online at http://augustaarchives.com. It is a pay site, but there are several plans available, even a one day plan. It is a fantastic historical research tool. I use it often.

Back in 1980 a buddy of mine and I were fishing near Missle Toe and we heard a boat just struggling. About 10 minutes later the boat came in sight, moving about 5 mph but max rpm, you guessed it, the trailer was still attached. But the funny thing was we told them the trailer had to come off. They removed the hitch pin and cut the straps, Later that year the same buddy and I were fishing near Keg Creek and heard a boat straining, we tow the guy to the landing and assisted him loading the boat on the trailer. It was taking on water. He told us he drained the tanks and put in new fuel because it was running bad. No he did not drain the tanks, he removed the hull plug and forgot to put it in.
