Three dead, one wounded in Myrtle Beach motel shooting

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Three people were killed and a fourth person was wounded in a shooting at an oceanfront motel in Myrtle Beach on Saturday night.

The shooting took place more than an hour after a man was wounded in a shooting at an intersection about seven blocks away.

The second shooting took place around 11 p.m. in front of crowds of tourists at the Bermuda Sands Motel along the beach’s new boardwalk, Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes said. Officers draped towels over the balcony of a breezeway just outside the doors to the rooms of the motel to shield two of the bodies from people on Ocean Boulevard.

“We’ve got detectives working on it around the clock,” Knipes said Sunday. “We don’t have any suspects in custody.”

Knipes would not say whether detectives have determined a motive in the motel case but said it didn’t appear to be a random shooting. Police couldn’t say whether the two shootings were related.

Those killed were Devonte Dantzler, 21, of Summerville; Sandy Gaddis Barnwell, 22, of Summerville; and Jamie Williams, 28, of Ladson, Horry County deputy coroner Darris Fowler said. The fourth victim, whose condition is not known, was hospitalized.

Witnesses said the shootings happened after a fight in front of the motel.

“We had just come up the stairs when the guy got shot. My husband saw when he fell right in front of our room,” said Megan Sloan, who lives in Salisbury, N.C., and was on vacation.

A police officer quickly knocked on their door, interviewed Sloan and her husband and asked them to stay in their room. They didn’t realize until they turned on the news Sunday morning that three people had died.

“It scared me to death. We tried to get our money back, but they wouldn’t give it back,” Sloan said.

The shooting happened during the annual Atlantic Beach BikeFest about 15 miles away during the Memorial Day weekend. Police say they typically deal with motorcycle wrecks and lesser offenses during the bike rally, but violence is unusual.

Knipes said Myrtle Beach had just two homicides in all of 2013.

Bikefest

Every year during Black Bikefest, it seems they have trouble. I remember some few years ago, some of the businesses would not open for fear of getting robbed and for shoplifting. This is also what caused the Orange Crush at Tybee Island to shut down.

MB is not the place to be during black bike week as others have mentioned. But, other than that, it is a great family vacation spot. Nasty beaches? Heck, with over 100 golf courses, how can it be that bad?

communities will never mature and act like grown-ups, no matter where they are. As for those of you who do not care for Myrtle Beach, the shores of Santa Barbara, Calif. are calling.

Why did that woman expect the hotel to give them their money back?? The hotel did nothing wrong to cause the shooting. Any excuse to get a free hotel room....shame on you! Besides, they need your money to clean up the blood!

We try to get out to the

We try to get out to the North MB/Cherry Grove area a couple times per year. Always have a great time. It can get a little pricey, but if you plan ahead, and look around you can have a good time without breaking the bank.

BB week and spring break is not the time to visit. Too many brain-dead idiots that have zero respect for themselves or others.

Ocean Isle

Ocean Isle is a good choice.Rent a house on the inter-coastal side, and dock your boat right outside the door.

I feel so sorry for those

I feel so sorry for those poor, unsuspecting Yankees who book vacations for that week and don't know what they are getting into.

Boycott

I guess the Boycott of South Carolina by the NAACP over the Confederate Flag is not working, at least for some Blacks.

Atlantic Beach

Had the best breakfast and juke boxes in Myrtle Beach in the late 60's.
And Ocean Drive had The Pad, The Barrel, and The Beach Party!

We visit nearly every year,

We visit nearly every year, and stay very close to North Myrtle Beach. The area further south gets trashier the further south you go. However, i know better than to take a trip during bike week, no matter if it's white or black.
