Former state Sen. Charles Walker is recovering from surgery at Georgia Regents Medical Center, Augusta Commissioner Bill Fennoy said he learned Monday.

“I understand that he did have surgery,” said Fennoy, a friend of Walker.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said no information was available on a patient by that name. A woman answering the phone at The Walker Group said no one would be available today to answer questions.

Fennoy confirmed Walker has been commuting to work in Augusta from the Columbia, S.C., transitional center he moved to in December.

Due for release in September, Walker was convicted of 127 felony charges related to various schemes in 2005. He paid more than $1 million in restitution, fines and court fees and served eight years in a federal prison in Estill, S.C.

Fennoy said Walker was expected to make a full recovery, but didn’t know additional details about his condition.

“He’s doing fine,” Fennoy said.

I don't believe I'd publically admit that I was friends with a crook like Charles Walker.

I knew who the Commissioner

I knew who the Commissioner was before I read the story. They're good friends. Fennoy used to work for Walker.

The people who voted Fennoy

The people who voted Fennoy in don't give a hoot that he's good friends with Walker. You can't ever convince them that Walker was no good for them, only good for himself. So, by default, Fennoy is also in the "can't do any wrong" group.
Very frustrating.

new black mayor (whoever that may be) coming into office in Richmond county next election day, y'all can expect to see a lot more of (Mr.) walker. Bet he runs for the state senate, U.S. representative or higher and wins, again. God help the State of Georgia!

Charles Walker is commuting

Charles Walker is commuting daily between the transitional center in Columbia, SC and "The Walker Group" in Augusta, GA? He just had surgery at GRMC (Georgia Regents Medical Center) and is recovering well? It is bad enough that the fox has been quietly returning daily to his own henhouse right here in Augusta, but is he paying for his own surgery or did taxpayers have to pick up the tab?

Publicly Supporting Walker

Bill Fennoy has been a staunch believer in Walker the whole time. He thinks Walker was falsely convicted and has publicly stated as much the whole time. Nothing new with that.

I had so hoped Mr Walker

Had seen his sins and would be a better person - guess we will see - if Mr Fennoy doesn't see them - neither will the rest of his supporters. Get well Mr Walker and help your people in a good way!

I don't wish Walker ill

I don't wish Walker ill health. He did his time, and as long as he goes about his personal life above board, I don't care. I think the man has the juice to do good though, if he will. Time will tell if he works for the people or his own aggrandizement.

As far as his "people"; I recall very well the sentiment expressed by some that "he was just getting his", as if past wrongs against blacks entitled them to lie, cheat, and steal to "get theirs".

The same was said about McIntyre.

BTW

What ever happened to Champ? He was trying to ride daddy's coat tail to success until daddy got caught. He was involved around town for a while after that, but just kind of disappeared from view after a couple of notable faceplants.

Champ is living in ATL, thank God. He's tried, but he is nothing without his father, he has tried several businesses and has failed with all of them in the past.

Someone living in a transitional house is still under incarceration, so the Federal Bureau of Prisons will be paying for his medical care, just as if he was still in the Big House- now he's just in the Little House.

WALKER

Why is this news? This man just like some other would-be politicos in Augusta have no respect for the law and lie at every turn. Trust him now...no way!

I'd be willing to bet that the surgery wasn't urgent but could have waited until his sentence had been completed and that Walker had the surgery now instead of later so the taxpayer would have to foot the bill. This guy is as sleezy as they get ...

Too bad the taxpayers had to

Too bad the taxpayers had to pay for it, (if what corgimom reported is true) but it really couldn't be put off til a later date, it had to be done immediately. I'm glad corgi also pointed out that he is still serving his sentence as she described. Another poster didn't seem to understand that. Easy to get that impression when he can travel from Columbia, SC to Augusta, GA everyday to work at his own business. Must be nice.
