COLUMBIA — South Carolina is urging kids to skip the bus or car pool and walk to school.

Today marks the state’s third annual Walk to School Day, an event organized by the S.C. Department of Transportation.

Department officials say it’s part of an effort to increase physical activity among youngsters.

The event mirrors International Walk to School Day held each October. Last year, 277 South Carolina schools registered to participate in the international event.

About 150 schools have registered to participate in the upcoming walk to school event.

WALK

What a novel idea! Kids actually walking somewhere like they did for decades before we started coddling kids. No wonder most are too fat and we spend so much money on education and get such poor results.

Great idea. Walking is healthy.

SC has the 6th highest obesity rate in the country. Time to start walking.
