Rants & Raves

A BIG RAVE TO the carrier who delivers to neighborhoods off Hereford Farm Road. Despite the ice storm, my paper was delivered at the usual time. Great job!

I READ ABOUT ALL the lines for restaurants that were open during the ice storm power outage. This must have happened at restaurants on or near Washington Road. Instead, I went to restaurants downtown, and they were not mobbed. People should think about downtown more often! All was calm and friendly when I was there - and the food was good.

THE BLUE-GREEN “paint” on the grass at the country club isn’t paint. It’s a spray on lawn care treatment that includes fertilizer. And rain will wash it off the sidewalks with time.

THE NEXT TIME you go to the polls remember this: Isakson and Chambliss were 2 of only 13 Republican that voted to cut military pension benefits along side the 54 Democrats.

IT IS NOT THE loud music that bothers me. But the foul-mouthed lyrics are very offensive. And by the way I thought the “n” word was supposed to be a racial slur, and yet I heard that word blaring repeatedly on your loud stereo at the gas station.

MANY, MANY RAVES to the volunteers from Rubicon that helped me get the big limbs gathered up from my yard and to the street for pick up. Many thanks y’all. I am full of gratitude and feel very blessed right now!

I’M GLAD IT’S noted as a LOAN and not a giveaway if they are going to do $8 million or so. They already “gave” away the land that was Gilbert Manor. I’m sure there were other giveaways as well. So the city needs to tighten that belt and be more financially sound. This business of borrowing based on the future is ridiculous!

RANT TO THE Augusta VA Hospital Uptown for giving employees AWOL who could not report to duty during the ice storm.

YES, THE ICE storm was devastating but how many people said, “it looks like a war zone.” We are so blessed that it actually did not, and may we be thankful that for most of us, things will improve, unlike those who truly are living or working in a real war zone.

THE WORD OF the Lord also says you should not tempt the hand of God. Those snake handlers are just boasting and tempting the hand of God.

West Augusta

''Why would anyone travel from Mtz/Evans to downtown during an ice storm....common sense says you would stay near your area...did ctyman put this on here...:)''

Why do you assume the person is referring to Martinez/Evans?

The Outback, Rhinehart's, California Dreaming, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn, Bonefish, Carrabba's, Applebee's, etc on Washington road is located in West Augusta..

How many restaurants are located on Washington road between Pleasant Home and Club Car(Martinez)? The majority of the national chains are located in either West Augusta or to an lesser extent Aiken/Evans..

COMMON SENSE

It doesn't matter where the people were...anyplace ...it is safer to stay near yourhome area...less danger in WRECKING A CAR....THAT is what I was getting at...from any place in the csra...geez..

btw--YOUR Richmond county school reports STINK...I would be very upset if I paid school taxes & saw the dismal results on tests....now, back to what I was doing!
You want to argue about EVERYTHING!

Why did you feel the need to

Why did you feel the need to bash Richmond County simply because I responded to your comment?

What county in the CSRA can offer two of the best high schools in the state besides Richmond?

The new magnet high school in South Augusta will only help the scores in the future..

Schools

I usually stay out of the debates about schools, but countyman is right. Richmond County does have 2 schools in the top 10. Both the magnet schools, which by design teach only the best and brightest so they should be highly ranked. The other thing I noticed as I scrolled through the list looking at the top 50 was no other RC school ranked that high. I also noticed ALL of the Columbia County high schools were in that list... just something to think about. BTW, I am a Richmond County resident.

Zero CC schools made the top 50

Roadkill.. What top 50 list?? The US News & World Report doesn't include any of the high schools in Columbia County in the top 50..
http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/georgia/rankings?int=c...

Lakeside is the best high school in CC and they weren't even ranked..
http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/georgia/districts/colu...

Some of the residents in CC are trying to build a magnet concept, because none of the high schools in Columbia County are on the level of Davidson..

According to the Washington Post... The most challenging schools in Richmond/Columbia are Davidson and ARC... Lakeside in Columbia County ranked third..

Davidson: 4.414
Richmond: 2.083
Lakeside: 1.871

I know all about that school...my granddaughter went there & I'm very proud of the results of THAT school...
This is what I'm talking about--LLamb put this on in another article..
Statistics

Here is a summation that is interesting:

. . . . . . . . . . Percentage of AP Students With Scores of 3+
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2011 . . . . . 2012 . . . . . 2013 . . . . . . .
Richmond . . . . . . 19.2 . . . . . 21.0 . . . . . . 19.2
. Georgia . . . . . . . 54.7 . . . . . 56.6 . . . . . . 55.4

This is telling me that very few schools are up to par..

If you would stop comparing one section against the other...(Mtz/Evans versus downtown Augusta) I wouldn't have the need to comeback with my post...we are NOT always talking down even when YOU think so..

One thing you have to

One thing you have to remember about surveys/lists/rankings is who requested the stats and what did they want them to say. Believe it or not, while I was in college I took a course titled "Statistics and Probabilities". The course was designed to teach how to get the response you wanted for your particular study. Example... 99% of dentists recommend Name Brand toothpaste. What isn't published is the dentists were asked "Would you recommend Name Brand toothpaste or baking soda for you patients?"

Those rankings are

Those rankings are meaningless, the real proof is looking at tests like the AP, that are given all over the country.

And you can see how RCBOE measures up. Which is what many of us have been saying all along.

Because after high school, those seniors are going to be going to colleges all over the US- and won't nobody care that they went to Davidson, or a magnet school, or to a "#1 ranked school". They will be competing with students from all over the country and international students too, and it seems as if they are not going to have an easy time of it.

I can attest to Nacho Mama's

I can attest to Nacho Mama's being extremely busy during the recent storm. I tried to eat there Wednesday night when my power was out in Beech Island. I called and they said there were twelve people in line, and tables available. I arrived ten minutes later, there were over 50 people in line, and not a seat to be had. I waited 45 minutes, and wasn't close enough to the front of the line to give me hope, so I moved on and ended up eating at Antonio's in North Augusta.

Seenitb4... When did I even

Seenitb4... When did I even mention downtown Augusta today? How is the article on the AP statistics even relevant to the rants/raves? What does your affiliation to Davidson have to do with the need to point out anything negative you can find in RC?

Roadkill.. Harlem didn't make the school digger top 50 and they usually produce higher SAT scores/graduation rates compared to Grovetown..

Let's keep in mind Westside routinely had better SAT, ACT, etc scores than every high school in CC except for Greenbrier/Lakeside.. The RCBOE allowed for students to attend Westside from all over the county, but the scores are beginning to go back to normal. The standardized test scores of ARC would be much higher if they didn't have some lower income neighborhoods in close proximity..

Better way to put it - - - -

The standardized test scores of ARC would be much higher if the students studied hard, did extra work, went to libraries to read through the encyclopedias, did not spend so much time playing video games, did not spend so much time fighting, etc.

Back when I was in school we had a period called "study hall." I learned more in study hall than in any other class. In study hall they would let you go to the library. I went there many, many days and spent the hour reading encyclopedias.

Facts

The IB program, SAT, ACT, and graduation rates are still very important. Many school districts might only for any student to use the AP course, but MANY Districts only allow for the TOP students to participate in the AP exams to help their scores..

" The standardized test scores of ARC would be much higher if they didn't have some lower income neighborhoods in close proximity.."

I base my information on facts instead of my personal opinion...

The Washington Post named ARC the most challenging school in Richmond/Columbia besides Davidson..
http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/schools/2013/li...

''The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2012 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (Subs. lunch) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). A (P) next to the school's name denotes a private school.''

"but MANY Districts only

"but MANY Districts only allow for the TOP students to participate in the AP exams to help their scores.."

Please post the link for that fact, because that is totally discriminatory and against the law. Which districts would that be, Countyman, and how do you know that?

You don't know that, that is just one of your suppositions.

Any child that attends an AP class is eligible to take the test if they choose to do so.

Oh, and Countyman? The index

Oh, and Countyman? The index score can be skewed by a low number of graduates- and we all know, RCBOE stinks when it comes to giving kids a diploma.

You know, high numerator, low denominator.

Several of us have tried to explain this to you before, you have to look at these rankings very carefully, they only look at one or two attributes that can easily give a false picture of a school, which is why these rankings are pretty much useless.

I know you set great store by them, but they are not statistically valid- or another way of saying it, they aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

Because you could use other attributes and get a totally different ranking.
