Ice, tree branches and downed power lines on Baker Avenue in Augusta

EVANS --During the last hour, the number of trees, tree limbs and power lines falling in Columbia County roadways has greatly increased, said Pam Tucker, director of the Emergency & Operations Division.

She says power outages are now being reported across the county and the situation has turned critical.

"We have numerous citizens who need power for medical equipment and many others who need shelter from the cold," Tucker said in a bulletin. "Therefore, we are opening Patriot’s Park (5445 Columbia Road, Grovetown) as a public shelter at 10  p.m. – in coordination with the Red Cross, DFCS, Health Department and Recreation Department. "

She said anyone without power who would like to go and needs transportation is requested to call 3-1-1 or (706) 868-3375 and provide your name, address and telephone number so they can coordinate transportation.  The National Guard is assisting with transportation.

As of 9 p.m. Columbia County Roads and Bridges was responding to trees down at:

  • Gibbs Rd & Haddlesay Dr
  • Old Petersburg Rd & Stage Coach
  • The Pass & Joshua Tree Dr
  • Keg Creek Dr & Washington Rd
  • Laurel Dr & Blue Springs
  • Hardy McManus & Hardy Pt

EVANS -- Weather Service advises that the worst of the wintry weather is over for us.  The temperature will be in the upper 20’s tonight – and we may still see a brief snow shower in the morning – then warming up around noon, Columbia County emergency management says.

The bad news is that we are going have black ice on all of the roads tomorrow, causing dangerous driving conditions – so we continue to ask you to please stay off the roads.

A Georgia Forestry Crew is assisting Columbia County Fire Rescue and Roads & Bridges with tree removal.  Be aware that trees are heavy with ice and limbs and trees continue to fall.

The Georgia State Patrol, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Bobby Christine with the Georgia National Guard are all here at the EOC.

Many areas continue to be without power, but crews are out in force working to get power restored.  It may come on and go back off.  Just be patient if you can.  They are working hard.

There are no roads closed in Columbia County at this time.  Road crews are out working (and doing a great job) scraping and sanding, as needed.

Storm Power Outages

OK People, if you are tempted to drive around and look at everything please stay at home. The people who are out rubbernecking are delaying Damage Assessment Teams, Tree Crews and Line Crews. If you know someone who is talking about this tell them not to! If you know someone who is out gawking call them and tell them to go home. Those trying to get power restored are being delayed by nosey neighbors!!!!
