WHAT: The edge of the road near vacant land has become a dumping ground for trash bags. An entire garbage can, that was not city issued, was overturned spilling food containers, paper, glass bottles and other debris onto the ground. Several other garbage bags and piles of trash littered the area.
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: It’s not known who disposes of trash on the land. Environmental Services Director Mark Johnson said right-of-way cleanup is shared by the county and the state. The solid waste department routinely cleans some common dumping areas, and others are cleaned as work crews observe problems or citizens notify the 311 customer service line.
ACTION PROMISED: When notified by an Augusta Chronicle reporter of the mess on Jan. 24, Johnson sent a supervisor to review the area finding trash on the right-of-way. Johnson said the area would be cleaned by the end of the following day. A week later, the area was still clean except for a few stray pieces of litter.
