Shepeard Community Blood Center posted the following to their web site:

"Due to anticipated inclement weather conditions:
Our centers in Augusta, Aiken and Evans will be closing at 2PM on Tuesday, 1/28/2014 and will reopen on Wednesday, 1/29/2014 at 12PM.
All Shepeard mobile blood drives have been canceled for Tuesday, 1/28/2014 and Wednesday, 1/29/2014."

Shepeard Community Blood Center is seeking more than 500 donors before the winter storm hits.

According to a news release, the storm could hinder travel and access to the blood center and would force blood drives to be rescheduled.

Shepeard is the only contracted local blood provider for 20 area hospital from Barnwell, S.C., to Baxley, Ga. To supply the hospitals, the blood center needs to take in 144 units each day, but the forecasted snow could cause the number to fall dangerously low.

There is also a need for plasma and platelets for burn center patients.

There are two donation centers in Augusta and one in Aiken. For more information, go to or call Pamela Rascon at (706) 833-9086 or Greg Bearden at (706) 833-8314.

Make Lemonade

Well, instead of whining about it, how about getting creative and sending your blood mobiles into residential neighborhoods while the snow is falling? You can knock door to door. You know people will be home because the schools will be out. You can send the blood mobiles through neighborhoods beginning at noon on Tuesday and then again all day Wednesday.

Residents might appreciate the convenience.
