PRINCETON, S.C. — South Carolina authorities are working to identify skeletal remains found near where a grandmother went missing last summer in this rural community between Greenwood and Greenville.

The remains were found Sunday following a search launched when a purse belonging to Dorothy Madden was found on Saturday. The 77-year-old grandmother was last seen in July. Investigators said Madden was suffering from an illness that may have made her confused or disoriented at the time of her disappearance.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division forensics investigators were called to process the scene.

Past attempts to find Madden have been unsuccessful. The remains found Sunday have not yet been positively identified.
