Ulysses Mays purchased the ticket from Kangaroo Express No. 3263, 4101 Windsor Spring Road, and claimed his prize of $416,454 on Jan. 9, according to information released by the Georgia Lottery this week.

Mays was one of two winners of the jackpot prize from the Jan. 3 Fantasy 5 drawing.

Get a financial advisor and

Get a financial advisor and LISTEN to them. You will burn through $400K in a hurry if you are frivolous with your spending.

Or just spend it, be happy

Or just spend it, be happy and keep working where you were working and doing what you were doing.

$400K after 6% GA and 25% federal taxes would leave you with about $235K. Enough for most folks to pay off their house, maybe their parents' house and get a new car. Not too much need for a financial advisor there.

Buy tax free Georgia bonds

Buy tax free Georgia bonds and get a tax free income for the life of the bond or until it is called and you get your principal back. About 4% now- $9400.00 a year or reinvest the interest and watch it grow tax free.

For someone not used to that

For someone not used to that sum of money, financial advise certainly IS in order. 1/4 million can provide a nice supplement to a pension if properly invested.

"Just spend it" is why so many people are ill prepared for economic hard times. A pension of $3000/mo today will mean diddle after 10-15 years of inflation. You best have a nest egg to help out.

I generally hear

Blow 10% on Fun and thrills
No use winning it, if you can't go reasonably mad with some of it.

If you have large bills pay them down / off and start fresh with the debt experience as a hindsight. You never get ahead paying 21% interest while collection 4 to 7% tax free.

Invest what's left to break the Family generational class barrier with technical and college educations for your brightest kids.

Why the thumbs down on advice

Why the thumbs down on advice about investing tax free. Is something wrong with you when there is nothing there but advice.
