WHERE: A portion of sidewalk in front of a vacant building at James Brown Boulevard and Ellis Street.

WHAT: Tree roots have broken the concrete sidewalk, causing large cracks and unlevel ground.

WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: The Augusta-Richmond County Engineering Department

ACTION PROMISED: Traffic engineer Steve Cassell said he will send a crew to look at the broken sidewalk. In the near future, a team will evaluate all sidewalks in the downtown area and make recommendations to improve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additionally, improvements to many downtown sidewalks are part of street redesign projects funded by the special 1 percent transportation sales tax.

A picture is worth a thousand

A picture is worth a thousand words. This picture epitomizes to a large extent, what is wrong with downtown; shabby and run down looking. Maybe some on the commission are accustomed to conditions like this, but it doesn't give visitors a positive impression and desire to come back.
