Old Man Winter’s paying a visit to the Augusta area and plans to stick around for at least a week.

Overnight temperatures are forecast to dip as low as 20 degrees, and daytime highs will stay in the 40s except Sunday, when the temperature could peak in the upper 50s, said meteorologist Tina Morrison, of the National Weather Service in West Columbia, S.C.

Friday will be cold and windy, with temperatures in the mid 40s, followed by a chilly night in the mid-20s. A 30 percent chance of rain is forecast for Saturday night and Sunday, but slightly higher temperatures will wipe out any chance for snow or ice.

“Our chance of rain looks like Saturday night and Sunday, and our cold air is in front of that,” Morrison said.

Even more cold weather will hit Augusta early next week. High temperatures on Monday and Tuesday will be in the upper 40s and upper 30s, respectively. Overnight lows will be in the low 20s.

A lake wind advisory was issued for Augusta and the surrounding area beginning 7 p.m. Thursday through midday Friday. Wind gusts could reach 25 to 30 knots.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for parts of the north Georgia mountains Thursday, continuing through Friday morning. Icy roads and accumulating snow at higher elevations were possible.

COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIPS

• Protect pipes from freezing. Leaving sink cabinet doors open will allow warm air to reach pipes.

• Safeguard against fire. Keep portable space heaters, open fireplaces and wood stoves away from curtains and flammable material. Install smoke alarms and change the batteries regularly.

• Drive carefully. Use extra caution when inclement weather causes hazardous road conditions.
