Baking is too precise for me. I cook with a pinch of this or that.

– Eva Longoria

I have a lot of experience when it comes to Christmas cookies. Consumption, mostly. That’s why your help is needed in the production area.

This Christmas, we have a new twist on an old tradition: making cookies. Newsroom elves have gathered 12 recipes for thoroughly modern cookies, but we don’t want to leave the traditional ones behind.

So, if you have a favorite Christmas cookie recipe, send it to us and we’ll run some of your submissions alongside ours.

Send e-mails to; letters to 725 Broad St., Augusta, GA 30913; faxes to (706) 722-7403. No call-ins, please. Starting Saturday, we’ll run at least one recipe a day.

THANK YOU: I would like to thank the very fine folks at Langley Methodist Church for the Christmas dinner and the fellowship Monday night. Ron L. Smith waited for me outside despite the rain.

Inside, I was greeted by Helen Sims, Bonnie Whatley and Nelle Murrell, who loves both her church and the South Carolina Gamecocks. She cheerfully told me about both.

I was also most appreciative of Claire Weeks and her speaker’s introduction, which she prepared from things I’ve told on myself in print over the years. (Note to self: Don’t write anything you don’t want to be shared with 60 or more people seated attentively in a church.)

There was turkey and dressing, pecan pie, rolls, macaroni and cheese, and ham. Lots of ham, if one considers the speaker.

GET WELL: Best wishes to my friend Bobby Deer, who had eye surgery this week. I’m not sure who left that new 2014 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Calendar in his mailbox, but I hope it inspires quick recovery.

MUSIC MAJORS: Your nominations for Best Christmas Song continue to be received.

“OK, so I’m a bit weird,” writes Edwin Groover. “With that said, my favorite music of the season is The Messiah. Mr. Handel did a fantastic job as he pulled a few verses from the Holy Bible, Isaiah, to compose this great oratorio.”

“Gesu Bambino, which my wife, Kathy, has sung beautifully for over 65 years,” said Earl Williams.

TODAY’S JOKE: Here’s one passed along by Louise Smith at Langley Methodist.

A man visiting his daughter over the holidays turned to her abruptly and asked, “Sweetie, can I borrow a newspaper?”

“Oh, Dad,” his daughter said, “don’t be so old-fashioned. Here, use my iPad.”

Her father took it, shrugged, then wheeled and smashed it down hard on the coffee table beside him.

“Daddy!” she shrieked.

“Oh, don’t worry, darling,” he said, “I’m sure the fly didn’t get away.”
