Barrow donates frequent-flier miles to support wounded military personnel and their families

U.S. Rep. John Barrow

U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga., donated 68,000 frequent-flier miles he accrued through congressional travel to the Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program this week as part of a yearly tradition he has to support charity.

“Air travel can be a costly burden for families trying to spend time together, and we should do everything we can to relieve that burden and get families together, especially during the holidays,” Barrow said in a news release. “These miles were earned by doing the work of the taxpayers, and members of Congress shouldn’t be able to keep them for personal use – they should go to the folks who really need them.”

In the past two years, Barrow has donated nearly 150,000 miles to the Children’s Miracle Network and the Fisher House Foundation, an organization he said “provides a great service to members of the military and their families.”

Through a partnership with the Department of Defense, the Fisher House Foundation uses frequent-flier miles that have been donated by passengers to provide airline tickets to support wounded, injured and ill service members and their families who are undergoing treatment at a military or VA medical center or who are attending authorized events.

In January 2013, the Fisher House Foundation joined with Barrow and the Yellow Ribbon Fund to provide airline tickets for wounded soldiers and their families from the 12th District to attend the presidential inauguration.

“Our thanks to Congressman Barrow for his continued donations of airline miles in support of our very special Hero Miles program,” said Ken Fisher, the chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation. “We are grateful for his generous support, and the many donors who make this special program possible. It is gifts like this that allow us to eliminate the barrier and expense of airline travel to meet the needs of our military families.”
