U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga., donated 68,000 frequent-flier miles he accrued through congressional travel to the Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program this week as part of a yearly tradition he has to support charity.

“Air travel can be a costly burden for families trying to spend time together, and we should do everything we can to relieve that burden and get families together, especially during the holidays,” Barrow said in a news release. “These miles were earned by doing the work of the taxpayers, and members of Congress shouldn’t be able to keep them for personal use – they should go to the folks who really need them.”

In the past two years, Barrow has donated nearly 150,000 miles to the Children’s Miracle Network and the Fisher House Foundation, an organization he said “provides a great service to members of the military and their families.”

Through a partnership with the Department of Defense, the Fisher House Foundation uses frequent-flier miles that have been donated by passengers to provide airline tickets to support wounded, injured and ill service members and their families who are undergoing treatment at a military or VA medical center or who are attending authorized events.

In January 2013, the Fisher House Foundation joined with Barrow and the Yellow Ribbon Fund to provide airline tickets for wounded soldiers and their families from the 12th District to attend the presidential inauguration.

“Our thanks to Congressman Barrow for his continued donations of airline miles in support of our very special Hero Miles program,” said Ken Fisher, the chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation. “We are grateful for his generous support, and the many donors who make this special program possible. It is gifts like this that allow us to eliminate the barrier and expense of airline travel to meet the needs of our military families.”

not impressed

i expected the "big fish in a little pond" political sycophant radio "personality" to be impressed and chime in...I am not. It costs Barrow nothing to make this "donation" and is nothing more than pathetic pandering. Do not forget who the democrat/marxist standard bearer is in this once great country and how he and his democrat/marxist party have LED THE WAY to her fall...Dont forget this boy is rubbing elbows and schmoozing with Pelosi Reid Rangel et all...HE IS THE DEMOCRAT/MARXIST party standard bearer for my gerrymandered district and i am disgusted by him and ALL THAT HE FALLS FOR..(As opposed to what REAL MEN OF CHARACTER USED TO STAND FOR) He and his demo/marxist party are arming terrorist regimes with nuclear bombs, there by threatening the very existence of Israel (the ONLY CIVIL NATION IN the Mideast - not to mention our best ally and true friend) the COMPLETE take over of the medical profession in America, arming the islamic party around the globe and turning a blind eye to the massacre in Benghazi...DITTO THE MASSACRE OF THOUSANDS OF CHRISTIANS AROUND THE WORLD BY HIS PRESIDENTS islamic buddies..What about the FULL TAKE OVER OF public education into FEDERALLY GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED SCHOOLS. ( the likes of which my children nor my grand children will ever set foot in so long as i have a breath in my body and am able to work) and the perpetration of the entitlement mentality he and his cohorts (rinos too here) have fostered in order to buy their lifetime in office...for any of you to fall for this ruse is making me understand why America is no longer true to her founding mothers and fathers principles....Dont any of you get who this person really is? he and his party think THEY ARE SMARTER THAN YOU and you need THEM to run your lives for you. THEY grant you your freedoms...NOT YOUR GOD AND CREATOR... How far the once mighty republic has fallen when people of his ilk are lording over the citizenry...

It's a Democrat

It's a Democrat tradition...donating somebody else's money. He didn't buy those tickets....we did.

Actually, I try to like Barrow, I really do.. He seems like a nice enough fellow and I think he does try to look out for the vets.......but he is a Democrat and keeps voting to preserve Obamacare when he knows it's a disaster. I just cannot support him.

The point is he didn't 'have' to do it. Nice gesture Congressman Barrow.

It is really not a donation

from Barrow's pocketbook.....this guy is really good a playing the game...
the best one was the "story" with him holding up a gun (supposed to have belonged to his grandfather). Grandfather stopped a lynching with said gun. Tugged at the heartstrings of African Americans and gun owners.....
the guy is good........

You confuse disagreement with hate fedex. It is a valid point people are making in here about the tickets being bought by us, at least those of us that pay taxes that is. I don't have a problem with him doing it but I know a political stunt when I see it. You can call it hate, I'll just call it common sense.

Frequent Flyers Miles

The state could negotiate lower fares if the "points" were eliminated. Or, the state should get the "points" and use them as needed.

While it can have the

While it can have the aftertaste of being a political ploy, the fact is he could have kept these miles for himself and no one would be the wiser. The fact that this isn't the first time he's donated them does say something for him. Like him or dislike him, political or not, it was the right thing to do.

It does make you wonder if

It does make you wonder if other politicians do the same thing with those accrued miles...donating them to programs such as those mentioned in the article is a good thing to do. Maybe it should be a requirement that they be donated.

Given the amount of MILES they rackup

are they using the miles to flies to WASH DC for work,
using them for personal reasons.

Damned if you do, damned if

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There is no pleasing some people. I think the very fact that the miles were accrued while on taxpayers' business is the whole point of why it was a good gesture to donate them. And who better than the Fisher House that helps military families when visiting injured active duty men/wome?

Now if he were planning to claim the donation on his tax return, I would have a problem.
