STATESBORO, Ga. — Statesboro voters for the first time have elected a woman to serve as mayor.

The Statesboro Herald reports 51-year-old Jan Moore won a close runoff election Tuesday night. Unofficial results show she defeated opponent Jonathan McCollar by fewer than 100 votes out of 1,867 mayoral ballots cast.

Moore, a school psychologist and business editor for the Statesboro Herald, will succeed departing Mayor Joe Brannen in January. Brannen had sought re-election but finished third in the Nov. 5 general election, which required a runoff because no candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win outright.

Moore says she’s “very humbled and grateful” for the support she received during her campaign.
