Rants & Raves

MY COMPLAINT ABOUT the Country Music Awards is that most of them are just not very country. Pop music has killed country music.

I AM GLAD that the authorities are looking at the facts again surrounding the death of the 17-year-old whose body was found rolled up in an upright mat in the school gym. It’s really a stretch to say that the boy fell into the rolled up mat and died there. It looks like homicide to me, with someone trying to hide the body in the mat. Let’s hope that all of the evidence is examined and the true cause of his death is discovered. My thoughts and prayers are with his parents, who are determined to find out the truth.

IT SEEMS THAT there is some hanky panky going on when it comes to removing an oak tree in the Forest Hills area. First it was because the tree “interferes with the development of public property,” and then the reason was changed to “tree is hazardous”; in other words, it contains decay, extensive deadwood or other structural problems. How quickly things change when there are commercial interests involved.

A BIG RANT to the people who constantly throw more and more work at our teachers. No matter how much bureaucratic mess you force the teachers to do, it will never change the students’ performance. The teachers bear the load that is dumped on them from the state, the principals and all the unnecessary consultants they bring in to find the perfect solution to making the students suddenly successful. The students or their parents aren’t held accountable for their study habits or grades.

INSTEAD OF GIVING away candy on Halloween, I gave away treats I get in kid’s meals from McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A and so forth. I figure they get plenty of candy from other places, and that gives them something different. That is better than giving them letters like that woman from out of state did to give to their parents about obesity.

A BIG RAVE for all of the nonsmokers in this country. Now that all of us have quit smoking, you will be able to pay for your own roads, bridges and other infrastructure that us smokers have been paying for all by ourselves all this time. Welcome to the new tax. You can start paying, too.

PAY RAISES AFTER years are needed and should be a priority. It’s really unethical and immoral to hope people will be desperate enough to keep working and working without just compensation.

Richmond County master plan attracting national attention!!

The Laney Walker and Bethlehem redevelopment continues to attract national attention and the Richmond County Master plan is doing the same thing.

The city received a $1.8 million grant after completing the Richmond County master plan($500k).
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/docs/Projects_FINAL_web.pdf

The grant helped created the blueprint for the future layout of the inner city and South Augusta. The grant focuses on 15th street, MLK, and Deans Bridge road(inner city and older parts of South Augusta)..

1. Cherry Tree/Sunset residents already being relocated
2. 15th street widening beginning in 2016
3. T-Splost improvements set aside for the Deans Bridge/Gordon Hwy intersection

I included the most recent article and the previous one from September...

Augusta Shows What Power to the People Can Accomplish

Countyman, I understand you are rightfully proud of your people in the downtown area. They are progressive and are providing new public housing for many people as Cherry Tree is replaced. Laney Walker is being cleaned up with tens of millions being dedicated to the task. The Salvation Army was able to build the Kroc Center to help your people. Bus routes are being extended to help those without transportation. The BOE has arranged to provide free meals at schools in the city year round. You people in the community get together and provide free haircuts and school supplies for the kids. The progressives regained a seat on the Commission with Bill Fennoy and you were able to get the outspoken Marion Williams back on the Commission. Paine College has started a football team that gives the people the Saturday excitement of college football. Have you been to a game yet? There's lots to be proud of for your folks.

"There's lots to be proud of

"There's lots to be proud of for your folks."

I guess that all depends on if you are on the receiving end of it or the paying for it and not getting any of it end.

Are there any these media outlets that countyman quotes that do articles on how blinders on, tunnel vision, focused downtown redevelopment over a period of 15 years can devastate other areas of the "consolidated" county through tax drain, total neglect, and Section 8 relocation. Or do these "trade rags" just do articles on the shiny new chrome front bumper and headlight rings we are putting on an old pickup truck with a good cab but the bed is rusted out.

RANT 2:

May justice be served in the death of Kendrick Johnson. Word is he was dating the sheriff's granddaughter. They were not of the same race.

Is it still 1933???

IU @ 0911

http://www.valdostadailytimes.com/local/x252041553/Sheriff-Prine-answers...

"THE TIMES: Do you have any family members or godchildren who knew or who were involved with Kendrick Johnson or his family? If so, what was the nature of the relationship(s)?

PRINE: “I have a daughter and two granddaughters, none of whom go to Lowndes High School or knew Kendrick Johnson.” The sheriff added later that he also has no godchildren."

IU, do you have any evidence to the contrary?

"Any such cover up would require the collaboration of any number of Sheriff’s Office employees, agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, personnel from the Medical Examiner’s office and crime scene technicians from the Valdosta Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory.”

"your people"...."your people"...."You people"..."your folks."

Condescension is a barrier to discussion, in my experience.

But if discussion isn't really the goal, I suppose it can be effective for other purposes.

I'm Probably Alone In This Belief....

...but I'm thinking Augusta being chosen as one of the top ten places to live as a retiree for under $40K can't be a bad thing. I mean we have our own set of problems here, like everywhere else, but the highlighting by "U.S. News And World Reports" is definitely a feather in Augusta's cap.

Going back to yesterdays comment on the BBQ. I grew up in eastern NC. My favorite BBQ stop was the BBQ Lodge in Kinston. If you had enough people to justify family style you got all the BBQ pork, BBQ chicken, fried chicken, brunswick stew, slaw, potato salad, and hush puppies you could eat. Nothing like NC BBQ.

Do you know anywhere you can get brunswick stew around Awguster?

Some Other Cities....

...in the "Ten Best Under $40K" include...

- Columbia, SC
- Jacksonville, FL
- San Antonio, TX
- St. Louis, MO
- Albuquerque, NM
- Knoxville, TN
- Little Rock, AR

Having visited all of them and lived in/near a couple, I think Augusta is in pretty good company.

It smells a little fishy to me too; and I would not be surprised if there is more to the story. However, I don't believe making statements that so far have no basis, to be productive in sorting it all out.
I sincerely hope they do continue a thorough, independent investigation into the young man's death; if nothing else, to give the family closure.

Facts

Riverman.. The Kroc Center was built for the entire CSRA and had almost 8,000 members back in August 2012.. The close to 700 people(2012 stats)who use the Kroc Center daily come from all over the metro and CSRA.

I know many people with disposable income(especially on Fort Gordon) who desire using 'reliable' public transportation.

Seenitb4.... I only want you to enjoy your birthday on this beautiful day in 2013.

Harley... Chattanooga is a cool little city and they've spent more time revitalizing their downtown compared to Augusta..

They get more of the day/weekend trips from people living in metro Atlanta versus the native Atlantans coming to Augusta..

I Chose Augusta

About those top ten cities where if you only make 40 k a year, it's still good living, I lived in two of them besides here. I lived in San Antonio for two years and Columbia for two years. They are both nice and of course San Antonio is huge, but I'll tell you something. When I got out of the Army I could have gone about anywhere I wanted because my skill was in demand. I chose the CSRA and I'm not sorry I came here. It really is paradise.
